The long 19th century - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Long 19th Century, defined by Eric Hobsbawm, a British Marxist historian and author, refers to the period between the years 1789 and 1914.
That period begins with the French Revolution, which established a non-monarchial republic in Europe, to the beginnings of World War I.
Upon the conclusion of World War I late in 1918, many of the fashions and territorial agreements of the 19th century proper (1801—1900) were eliminated.

Walt Disney Concert Hall - Performance Details
Historians use a concept called "the long 19th century" to characterize the period between 1789 (the French Revolution) and 1914 (the outbreak of World War I) in European history.
One reason historians employ the concept of a "long" 19th century is that it can encompass one of the key developments of the period, the rise of nationalism.
That the 19th century also witnessed the development of "national" schools of poetry and composition was no accident when seen from this perspective.

David Blackbourn presents the latest scholarship on 19th century German history in an interesting and provocative way.
His thesis is that German society experienced a faster rate of industrialization in the mid and late 19th century than either Britain or France, and that this change created new social problems as well as societal winners and losers.
It is against this background of change and social fissures that Blackbourn traces the events that moved Germany from a fragmented, aristocratic society to a "modern" industrial society.

History at its most interesting is complex, a fascinating whirl of events, personalities, and forces, and few periods of history offer us such captivating complexity as Europe's 19th "century"—the often-broadly defined period from the French Revolution to World War I that formed the foundation of the modern world.

19th-Century London Concert Life Database Research Project
The aim of this project is to study large-scale change in the nature of concert life and in the development of repertoire in London during the 'long 19th century', drawing on contemporary newspapers, periodicals, and concert programmes.
The database, which was programmed in ORACLE and designed by Civic Computing, Edinburgh, is housed at the School of Arts and Humanities, Oxford Brookes University, and supported by its Computer Services Department.
Although the social and natural sciences have long had access to funding to establish centres of research expertise, it was not until the launch of the AHRC's Research Centres scheme that researchers in the arts and humanities benefited from a similar opportunity.
