  Hell - Crystalinks
Hell appears in several mythologies and religions in different guises, and is commonly inhabited by demons and the souls of dead people.
Hell is referred to as a place apart from Heaven, and implies that after the end of the world the Earth (or what it becomes) will be Hell, too (as well as all that it is not Heaven).
Hells are also described in various Puranas and other scriptures. It is believed that people who commit 'paap' (sin) go to hell and have to go through the punishments in accordance to the sins they committed.

According to popular imagery connected to the Christian mythos, Hell is a place ruled by the Devil, or Satan, who is popularly depicted as a being who carries a pitchfork, has flaming red skin, horns on his head, and a long thin tail with a diamond shaped barb on it.
Hell is referred to a place out of Heaven, and implies that after the end of the world the Earth (or what it becomes) will be Hell too (as well as all what it is not Heaven).
Later Christian scholars speculated that Hell is an underground place, presumably derived from the idea of the Sheol, and referred to as the lower part of the universe under the Earth's ground (the fact that the Earth was spherical was unknown by that time).

Problem of Hell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Hell has traditionally been regarded as a punishment for wrong-doing or sin in life, the problem arises primarily from the severity of the punishment, if Hell is indeed seen as eternal torture.
Mirroring similar discussions in the problem of evil, another argument goes that human beings are presumed to have free will, and although a benevolent God would prefer to see everyone saved, he would also allow humans to control their own destinies.
This problem is magnified for religions which claim to be the only path to salvation, since it is clear that which religion a person subscribes to is largely a result of the culture they are born in.

 R.C. Sproul on Hell
The Bible describes hell as a place of outer darkness, a lake of fire, a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth, a place of eternal separation from the blessings of God, a prison, a place of torment where the worm doesn’t turn or die.
It is probable that the sinner in hell would prefer a literal lake of fire as his eternal abode to the reality of hell represented in the lake of fire image.
Their problem in hell will not be separation from God, it will be the presence of God that will torment them.

 Heaven and Hell
In Christianity, the doctrines of heaven and hell are associated with different, and sometimes competing, contrasts:  contrasts such as reward/punishment, mercy/justice, or grace/desert.
The Traditional Doctrine of Hell in Christianity is just this particular elaboration of the Punishment Model; this doctrine, or a minor modification of it, has been maintained by most theologians in the history of Christianity.
The fundamental problem of the justice of hell, on the traditional conception, is that people receive an infinite punishment for less than infinite sin.

Although Kvanvig proposes to construe the problem of hell from a Christian perspective, he believes hell a problem for any religion which accepts an all powerful, all knowing, all benevolent God and also accepts the idea of some sort of after-life (Kvanvig, p.163).
Kvanvig says that the problem with BOTH the Strong View of Hell and the simple alternatives is that they both (implicitly) interpret heaven from God's point of view (mercy) and hell from humanity's point of view (justice).
The account of hell presented so far is true to the biblical record in that hell, like heaven, issues from a stable divine character, the primary constituent of which is love.

 Hell
This problem is not answered by the traditional view of hell as it is not possible to multiply or worsen ‘eternal’ torment.
Much of the confusion about hell has arisen from the fact that several separate and distinctive words (Sheol, Hades, Gehenna and Tartarus) in both Hebrew and Greek, were unfortunately translated into the single English word ‘hell’, which is now commonly used to signify the place of the damned.
If the popular concept of a fiery hell is true then it stands to reason that the pain of hell and the salvation of Christ should be the two most talked about doctrines in Scripture.

A Defense of the Christian Doctrine of Hell
The Bible describes hell in symbols, which is evident by the diverse portrayals given in scripture.
There is no need to try and harmonize hell as a literal pit of darkness that also is composed of fire or to construe hell as some literal lake of fire.
Another problem people raise about hell is that it seems unjust to punish someone irrevocably for an eternity.

The doctrine of hell presents the most intractable version of the problem of evil, for though it might be argued that ordinary pain and evil can somehow be compensated for by the course of future experience, the pain and suffering of hell leads nowhere.
This work develops an understanding of hell that is common to a broad variety of religious perspectives, and argues that the usual understandings of hell are incapable of solving the problem of hell.
He argues that both the traditional understanding and the typical alternatives fail to solve the problem of hell because they share the common flaw of being constructed on a retributive model of hell.
