The haunting folk tune "Western Wind, When Wilt Thou Blow" briefly became the L'homme armé of Tudor England--like L'homme armé, it was a secular tune often used as a basis for settings of the Mass.
Western Wind is one of the earliest surviving pieces of English poetry - a song really.
The brilliance of this particular collection, however, is the pairing of John Taverner, Christopher Tye and John Sheppard's Masses all based on the Western Wind tune (which is also included).

John Taverner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His best known mass is based on a popular song, " The Western Wynde" (John Sheppard and Christopher Tye later also wrote masses based on this same song).
Taverner's Western Wynde mass is unusual for the period because the theme tune appears in each of the four parts at different times.
For example in the Western Wynde mass, the theme is repeated nine times in each section.

A good exploration of the range of Taverner's haunting music from the aptly glorious scale of the antiphon O Splendor (such antiphons were sung as part of extra devotions after the evening service of Compline) to the setting of the morning canticle, the Te Deum.
Particularly interesting is the Western Wynde mass, named for the folk tune on which the mass is based.
Either as a result of the popularity of this mass or the tune, a number of Taverner's contemporaries and successors wrote masses around the same theme.

Cantus firmus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Being that this music arose during the time of the crusades, it is possible that the text "the armed man should be feared" was used as propaganda supporting the Knights in the Middle East.
Other secular examples include 'Fortuna Desperata', 'Mille regretz' and 'The western wynde'.
Setting the cantus firmus was the essential pedagogical tool in Gradus ad Parnassum by Johann Joseph Fux and formed the basis of teaching his species counterpoint.
