TheFutureEmbrace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TheFutureEmbrace is the first solo album by Billy Corgan, formerly of The Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan.
The album, which features a predominant electronic feel, was preceded by the release of the first single, entitled "Walking Shade".
TheFutureEmbrace's instrumentation and programming were mainly performed by Corgan himself, but features a collaboration with The Cure lead singer Robert Smith on a cover of the Bee Gees' song "toLOVEsomebody", while "DIA" features drums programmed by Corgan's longtime creative foil, ex-Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.

 PureGrainAudio.com :: reviews :: billy corgan [thefutureembrace]
While TheFutureEmbrace does not come close to recapturing the magic that Corgan achieved with the Pumpkins in the mid 1990s, he has produced an incredibly personal record that includes at least a few respectable songs.
TheFutureEmbrace gets underway with one of the more commercially viable songs on the album, “All Things Change.” It only takes a few seconds into the song to realize that this isn’t going to be an album of old Pumpkins knockoffs and throwaways.
The album is not easily accessible at first, but after a few listens several of the songs, mostly within the first six, began to grow on me. The last half of the disc is almost a complete write off (with the exception of “Walking Shade").

TheFutureEmbrace sounds like former Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan has stumbled upon an old Victorian time machine, travelled back to England 1982 to soak up the goth, pop and new romantic movements, before travelling back to Berlin, circa '77, to jam with Kraftwerk and the Thin White Duke.
TheFutureEmbrace is an album that sounds like the Pumpkins as they moved towards the goth/electronic phase of their career, but at the same time, is an album that also sounds like a Depeche Mode covers band in need of a serious direction!!!
Corgan clearly loves the British new-wave movement, drafting in the cold dissonant synths of the Mode, the bleak and fragmented lyrics of Station to Station/Heroes era Bowie, the cold delivery of Ian Curtis, and the fuzzy guitars and the air of overblown melodrama favoured by The Cure.

Billy Corgan's TheFutureEmbrace: The Slow Transformation from 'Billy' to 'Mr.
TheFutureEmbrace is a statement of doing just what its title implies: It's a coming of age record, one in which the subject is inviting his future rather than battling it.
As if putting the final nail in the coffin of his bombastic tendencies, "Strayz" is beatless with quiet synths and a quiet bass guitar, as Billy sits in a corner and sings his saddest, most inward thoughts to nobody in particular.

TheFutureEmbrace is the record that "Adore" would have been had Billy, as he said by his own admissions shortly after "Adore" came out, had "stuck with the vision" of the record.
TheFutureEmbrace starts off with the low humming and drum beats of "All Things Change" which soon flows into a very hooky vocal melody.
TheFutureEmbrace, like "Adore" will prove to be an underrated classic; it will stand the test of time far better than anything else released in 2005.

 RTE.ie Entertainment - Billy Corgan - TheFutureEmbrace
Just as his solo debut was released last month, Billy Corgan put full page ads in Chicago newspapers, stating his desire to "renew and revive" the band he made his name with, Smashing Pumpkins.
With the Smashing Pumpkins Corgan made his most underrated - and arguably best - album when he revealed his synth influences and softest side on 'Adore'; here that combination results in a trudge that will drive you straight back to the solace of that record.
Overproduced and lopsided with fussy electronics, at times 'TheFutureEmbrace' sounds like it was either made by robots or created for use on a catwalk, not a stage.

TheFutureEmbrace | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
This is all stuff the 38-year-old Corgan grew up with, so he knows what he's doing, and he's done an excellent job of avoiding the derivative trap so many current retro acts are stuck in.
But it also means that TheFutureEmbrace is a bit colder than what's expected of Corgan, especially after Zwan's celebratory Mary Star Of The Sea, and it goes without saying that he's handed in his trendsetter badge.
But the fact remains that he's a pop showman, and regardless of the vehicle, he's going to continue writing transcendent sing-along rock songs from the heart.

Over shadowy guitar lines and beautifully lush cascades of sound, CORGAN warmly and vividly delivers pure expressions of love and devotion in the face of uncertainty, doubt and sorrow.
His tone is questioning, his vocals are tender, and his lyrical flow is as seamless as the poetry in his book of poems "Blinking With Fists" (Faber and Faber, 10/04).

 Cokemachineglow.com - Billy Corgan: TheFutureEmbrace
This line of thinking seems to have reached its apotheosis with his first nominal solo album: the only reason anyone would care about Billy Corgan’s first solo record is because you care about Billy Corgan.
The second quality is that TheFutureEmbrace bears more than a passing resemblance to Ultra, the Depeche Mode album from 1997.
This isn’t simply because both are essentially an eighties gloom-synth-pop revival through the lens of distortion-heavy nineties alterna-rock, but I mean literally: “A100” seems to be comprised of the same equipment that “It’s No Good” was, down to the low distorted bass-synth to the echo-laden saw-tooth synth.

Following the short-lived experiment with pop sounds in Zwan, the dome-headed one has found solace in the music of his youth.
TheFutureEmbrace is rooted in the Cure's spiky melancholy, Cocteau Twins guitar washes and Berlin-era Bowie's eerie desolation but he's succeeded in bringing his own imprint.
These are very personal, statuesque songs which seem to say that Billy is cuddly really and wants to be loved.

Billy Corgan: TheFutureEmbrace - Christian Music Today
On what's technically his solo debut (unless you count his one-album, post-Smashing Pumpkins diversion with Zwan), Billy Corgan has a surprise for longtime fans—a shortage of rage (but still plenty of his trademark whine).
TheFutureEmbrace is, according to Corgan, "an album of hope" representing his "desire to make music to stand and to fight for."
Instead of using heavy make-up to cover the wine-stained scars on his arm and hand in previous photo shoots, he now ditches the foundation and frills for a look at the real Corgan, flaws and all.

"TheFutureEmbrace" the first solo work by Billy Corgan, released halfway through 2005, made me feel the same way as another album that came out at about the same time by NIN legend, Trent Reznor.
Both albums are good, as in "3.5 stars good", but they lack the edge that we've always been used to in their music, as if a bit of a light has died down in their work.

'TheFutureEmbrace' is a record that's uplifting and depressing at once, with some vintage Corgan mystery woven into the lyrics: "Honey choose my wet dream, a naked soul just has to grieve."
If the Pumpkins were just a little too hard for you, but you always secretly coveted Corgan's baby-toned whine then 'TheFutureEmbrace' may be just what you're after.
Pumpkins fans may find it disappointing, as Corgan firmly turns his back on his past successes, but give it a chance and its bleak aural landscapes mixed with synth-driven melodies will grow on you.

Billy Corgan - TheFutureEmbrace : album review
There's a preponderance of synth sounds on the album, a surprising lack of guitars, and a rather doomy atmosphere all round.
It takes a few listens for the album to sink in, and due to the similarity of the songs, at first hearing it's likely to wash over you somewhat, with only the optimistic opener All Things Change and the brutal keyboard riff of A100 really sticking in the mind.
All is redeemed for the closing track Strayz, which ends the album on a beautifully tender note.

Watch your step, though, and you can bask in an often bracing extension of the sweeping, striving rock and emotional vulnerability that made Corgan a beacon of alternative rock in the '90s.
The richly produced "TheFutureEmbrace" is a much more developed record than "Mary Star of the Sea," the 2003 album by Corgan's short-lived post-Pumpkins band Zwan.
Here Corgan takes his sonic signatures — the blend of swoon and snarl, the high-pitched whine, the grandly melancholic harmonies and progressions — and adds a big dose of electronics, staking out a quasi-Goth territory with echoes of brisk New Order, burbling Peter Gabriel and shimmering Brian Wilson.
