Von Harbou was elected to lead the association of German screenwriters, lending her credibility to the Nazi regime, and she chose to move into the director's chair for two movies, Elisabeth und der Narr and Hanneles Himmelfahrt, which she also wrote.

Thea von Harbou (December 27, 1888 ;– July 1, 1954) was a German actress and author of some noble Prussian descent.
This presumably led to the divorce from husband Fritz Lang who left Germany in 1934 for Paris after his latest film Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse had been declared illegal by Nazi officials because of its criticism of Nazi ideology.
Harbou wrote the script for Der Herrscher 1937, directed by Veit Harlan and starring Emil Jannings.

Von Harbou was busy with the adaptation of her 1917 novel Das indische Grabmal (The Indian Tomb), when Joy May assigned Lang to help her with the writing and plan the details of production.
Whether von Harbou or her interrogators jotted down the comment in her detention papers that she was divorced from "the Jewish director Fritz Lang" is uncertain, but otherwise her former husband did not come up in the questioning.
Von Harbou denied any anti-Semitism, denied involvement in any Aryanization of Jewish property, noting instead several instances where she had acted as a good Samaritan--helping people out of Germany or out of trouble with Goebbels (including her Jewish secretary Hilde Guttmann and actor Alfred Abel, who had played the master of Metropolis).

She married the prominent film director Fritz Lang, who put many of her film-scripts, such as "Die Nibelungen," "Metropolis," and "Die Frau im Mond" on the screen.
After the end of World War II in 1945, Thea von Harbou was confined for a period of time, but she was able to get back into the film business by synchronizing foreign films.
