  Theages
Theages : He knows it, as well as I, Socrates, since I have often told him ; only he says this to you of set purpose, making as if he did not know what I desire.
Theages : Yes, but not by force, or as despots do, but with their consent, as is done by all the other men of importance in the state.
Theages : Have no more fears for me now, father, so long as you are able to persuade him to receive me as his pupil.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2001.10.08
It is, in other words, an uncompromisingly scholarly editio maior, of a kind relatively rare in English-speaking Platonic scholarship of the past half-century, where dialogues have more often been presented as translations with commentaries, or in the form of editions aimed at groups with a limited knowledge of ancient Greek.
It deals with a familiar theme from the Socratic dialogues, the problem of how a parent is to educate a child, and it elaborates the philosophically marginal topic of Socrates' daimonion.
I think that the juxtaposition in this particular case, phthoneis te apstôi kai ouk etheleis, is hendiadys rather than explication: i.e., do not translate it as "you are begrudging to him, that is, you are unwilling" (and certainly not by Smith's tautology "you begrudge...and refuse"), but along the lines of "you spitefully refuse".

The Platonic Theages has been in existence for more than 2,300 years, but Dr. Mark Joyal, Classics, has just published the first edition of the controversial dialogue based on a study of all known manuscript editions and other textual evidence.
Originally assumed to have been written by Plato himself, the Theages’ authorship was questioned as recently as 1800, when the great German thinkers Schlagel and Scheirmacher presented evidence that Plato did not write the dialogue.
Joyal collated all 37 of the surviving medieval and Renaissance manuscript versions of the Theages in preparing this work; this involved “autopsy” (looking at the actual manuscripts) as well as employing photographs and microfilm of other manuscripts.

The dubia include the First Alcibiades (or Alcibiades I), Minos, and Theages, all of which, if authentic, would probably go with the early or early transitional groups, the Cleitophon, which might be early, early transitional, or middle, and the letters, of which the Seventh seems the best candidate for authenticity.
Some scholars have also suggested the possibility that the Third may also be genuine.

How Socrates Taught by Sanderson Beck
Although Socrates saw himself as a catalyst or midwife, he felt it was actually the power of God which enabled the person he was talking with to improve.
Alcibiades responds that he depends on what Socrates wishes, but Socrates corrects him by saying that it depends on God's will.5 In the Theages there is a lengthy description of several incidents where Socrates counseled his friends when he received an indication from his divine sign.
Socrates twice warned another Timarchus not to leave a drinking party, but the third time Timarchus slipped out unnoticed and went to commit a crime for which he was later executed.
