Topic: Theales

  New Millennium Encyclopedia +246teanme99+
The tea family is a member of the order Theales, comprising nearly 3500 species placed in 18 families.
The order Theales is primarily tropical in distribution, centered in southeastern Asia, with few temperate members.
Members of the family produce a characteristic two-winged fruit, which is distributed by the wind; the wings are formed by persistent sepals.

FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA - Volume 1, Chapter 14
The Dilleniaceae appear to be the modern remnants of the group that gave rise not only to Theales but also to nearly all the rest of the subclass Dilleniidae.
Theales are the central group of Dilleniidae, from which all the other orders except the Dilleniales appear to have evolved.
The Ericales are evidently allied to the Actinidiaceae (Theales), and the Diapensiales appear to be allied to the Ericales.

Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society: Unusual pit membrane remnants in perforation plates of Cyrillaceae1
Retention of pit membrane remnants in C. racemiflora may represent a tendency to lose conductive capability related to the habitat (understory, marshy ground) This could be considered a stage in vessel loss except for the fact that three other criteria for vessel loss are not met.
Presence of pit membrane remnants in Cyrillaceae is consistent with such presence in the sister family Clethraceae as well as in other families of Ericales (Theales of some authors) as defined on the basis of recent molecular data.
Pit membrane remnants of a distinctive type (threads, oriented axially in the perforations) were reported previously in wood of one species of Cyrillaceae, Cliftonia monophylla (Carlquist 1992).

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
The association of the Marcgraviaceae with the Theales is not questioned by any of the modern workers.
It is a logical extension to do so in Takhtajan's system when he separates the Hypericales from the Theales, but Reveal's position is less firmly established given that he keeps Clusiaceae in the Theales.
The highly specialized nature of the plant, and Cronquist's suggestion that the relationship between Clusiaceae and Elatinaceae "is more likely collateral" and probably reflects some "sort of close parallelism" is supported by associating the two in different orders.

What is interesting here is the repositioning of the related Ancistrocladales (Acistrocladaceae) and Dioncophyllales (Dioncophyllaceae) that Thorne retained in his Scytopetalineae as part of his broadly defined Theales, a taxon next to but separate from his Ericales.
My own view is that the free petals of the Barringtoniaceae and Lecythidaceae are sufficient to associate the two families into a single family rather than having to emphasize a pollen feature to separate the two.
There is no attempt here to recount all of the details of one or more of the families being associated with the Papaverales, Theales, Violales, Saxifragales or the Rosales.
