He began his career as an actor, appearing in repertory at the Harkness Theater in 1975; Gutierrez understudied seven roles in Edward II, played Wesley in The Time of Your Life, and understudied two roles in Three Sisters, for which production he also served as musical director.

Getting Latino audiences into theaters, getting work written from a Latino point of view in front of audiences, those things are tough to do and it's probably going to be tough for a while.
I dream of an opening a large regional theater, mainstream for lack of a better word, that would devote 50 percent of its programming to Latino material but would also do material that reflects other parts of the culture.

The depiction of adolescent sexuality was deemed too graphic by the theater, and the show never officially opened.

Conceived and launched by Lincoln Center Theater in 1995, the Directors Lab has been designed as an interactive forum to engage directors in an intensive study of their craft and to foster collaborative relationships among a community of artists.
