Theban Legion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Theban legion figures in Christian mythology as an entire Roman legion — of "six thousand six hundred and sixty-six men" — who had converted en masse to Christianity and were martyred together, in 286 A.D., according to the hagiographies of Saint Maurice, the chief among the Legion's saints.
The Theban Legion was commanded in its march by Mauritius, Candidus, and Exupernis, all of whom are venerated as saints.

Moritz and the Indian Ocean isle of Mauritius, was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion.
The traditional story of Christian mythology is that the legion, entirely composed of Christians, had been called from Thebes in Egypt to go to Gaul, to assist Maximian, which they did valiantly.
Some historians suggest that this was a pious fabrication by bishop Theodore of sometime between 388 and 394, whom Eucherius, bishop of Lyon, cites as his source of this story, to encourage his contemporary Christians serving in the Roman army to ignore the orders their pagan superiors and instead side with the Christians.

The entire Theban legion was massacred en masse by their own side when they refused to participate in pagan sacrifices at Aaunum, an area of modern Switzerland.
The fact that St. Maurice is said to have belonged to a legion called the Thebiae, which was stationed in northern Italy in the early 5th century at the latest, suggests that Theodore invented the story of St. Maurice in order to appeal to this legion for political reasons.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Agaunum
Agaunum, in the diocese of Sion, Switzerland, owes its fame to an event related by St. Eucherius, Bishop of Lyons, the martyrdom of a Roman legion, known as the "Theban Legion", at the beginning of the fourth century.
The sources for the martyrdom of the Thebans are few, consisting of two editions of their "Acts", certain entries in the calendars and in the martyrologies, and the letter of Bishop Eucherius, written in the year 450.
The objections raised against the fact itself, and the attempts made to reduce the massacre of the legion to the mere death of six men, one of whom was a veteran, do not seem to merit attention.

The Origin of the Cult of St. Maurice
To the extent, therefore, that the story of Maurice and the Theban legion seems to accept military service and the notion of justifiable homicide, it betrays its author's acceptance of a point of view which did not dominate within the church until the very late 4th century.
This may be taken to indicate, not only that Theodore invented the whole story of Maurice and the Theban legion, but that he also used some conveniently discovered bodies to support his fiction.
In short, I suggest that he commanded Theban troops who were stationed in or about Octodurum in the aftermath of the defeat of Maximus, and that Bishop Theodore chose the name of Maurice for his newly discovered martyr out of deference to him.

There were units of Theban soldiers which showed by their very titles that they dated from the Tetrarchic period when Diocletian and Maximian had shared the empire together.40 Whatever doubts there may have been in some quarters were undoubtedly rationalised away as has happened until this present day, and will doubtless continue to happen.
The general point that propaganda like Theodore's account of the Theban Legion may have weakened the resolve of some of the forces who fought for Eugenius, and have tempted them to defect at the first practical opportunity, is made more interesting still by the evidence of the Notitia Dignitatum.

Against the authenticity of the legend it may be alleged that almost a century and a half intervened between its supposed occurrence and the oldest record of it, while contemporaries and earlier authors make no reference to it.
No Theban legion is known to have existed at that time, and it is improbable that a general like Maximian, however great his hatred of the Christians, would have put to death an entire legion at a time when he needed his soldiers to keep the barbarians and rebels in check.
