Nippop | Thee Michelle Gun Elephant | Profile
TMGE (the band’s name is apparently a surreal take on the title of an album by the Damned, Machine Gun Etiquette -- go figure) first got together in 1991 and debuted at Shelter, a well-known live house in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa district and immediately made a name for themselves with their punkish, Ramones-like rock.
Crucial to the band’s appeal was lead vocalist Yusuke Chiba, who sang with a maniacal intensity that made one wonder whether he was demonically possessed, and lead guitarist Futoshi Abe, who combined the riffmeistery of a Keith Richards with the buzzsaw attack of a Johnny Ramone.
TMGE received critical raves in the U.S., but like many other Japanese acts, unfortunately never had much of an impact outside of Japan.

Even though Thee Michelle Gun Elephant have been around for nearly a decade in their native Japan (where Gear Blues has already been out for two years), Japanese punk-pop is a hard sell in the U.S. Good music is, however, universal, and Gear Blues will undoubtedly find Thee Michelle Gun Elephant a great cult following.

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (also known as TMGE) was a Japanese Garage band of notable popularity in its country of origin.
The band was formed while the band members were students at Tokyo's Meiji Gakuin University, and their name came from a combination of the name of Billy Childish's offbeat band Thee Headcoats and a former bassist's mispronunciation of the name of The Damned's album, Machine Gun Etiquette.
Their first major label release, Wonder Style, was released in 1995, and produced in London, United Kingdom, by Chris Brown, who previously engineered albums and tracks for Radiohead and Pink Floyd.
