  Thegn - LoveToKnow 1911
The thegn became a member of a territorial nobility, and the dignity of thegnhood was attainable by those who fulfilled certain conditions.
The thegn was inferior to the aethel, the member of a kingly family, but he was superior to the ceorl, and, says C:_adwick,"from the time of Aethelstan the distinction between thegn and ceorl was the broad line of demarcation between the classes of society." His status is shown by his wergild.
There arose a class of king's thegns, corresponding to the earlier thegns, and a larger class of inferior thegns, some of them the thegns of bishops or of other thegns.

Thegn or Thane, is an Anglo-Saxon word (þeg(e)n) meaning an attendant, servant, retainer or official.
The thegn was inferior to the aethel, the member of a kingly family, but he was superior to the ceorl, and, says Chadwick, "from the time of Aethelstan the distinction between thegn and ceorl was the broad line of demarcation between the classes of society." His status is shown by his wergild.
A king's thegn was a person of great importance, the contemporary idea being shown by the Latin translation of the words as comes (compare "count").

 The Thegn Anglo-Saxon Sword
The thegn was inferior to the aethel (a member of a king's family) but he was superior to the ceorl (a freeman of the lowest class).
The highest level thegn, a king's thegn, was a person of great importance with special privileges, as contemporary manuscripts illustrate by the Latin translation of the word thegn as comes (a title comparable to "count" in later times).
The curved upper and lower guards of this sword and the three lobed pommel with the prominent middle peak are typical features for Anglo-Saxon swords of this period.

The Thegn: Beholden to His King
In Anglo-Saxon England, a thegn was a man who was given land by his king or by another hereditary noble.
Looking at this arrangement from a modern point of view, one might conclude that the thegn didn't get anything, that he had to beg an important man for the right to own land and that he had to fight for that same man on a whim.
The son of a thegn would have to petition his king or lord for the right to be a thegn, just like everyone else.

 Thegn
Anglo Saxon thegn or thane was a noble who held his estate on the understanding that in times of war he would fight for the king, be an active member of the witan and undertake duties relating to local and central government.
During the reign of the Danish kings the housecarl replaced many of the duties they originally undertook.
Following the Norman invasion, the thegn's general affluence diminished due to the practice of splitting the estate between the sons following his death and Norman preferences for their own people.

This book has the same author and illustrator as the Viking Hersir title, and resembles that book greatly.
The great thing about all the Opsprey titles, though, is that each has a section in the middle made up of beautiful full color illustrations which portray the appearance and activities of the troops under study.

By the 11th century wealthy ceorls could become thegns, but most lost their personal freedom after the Norman conquest, and 'churl' came to mean an ill-bred person.
The importance of the thegns was diminished by the time of the Norman conquest because estates of a deceased thegn were divided amongst all his sons.
By the late 9th century the witan had become a formal gathering of the principle ealdormen, thegns and bishops, summoned by the king to give him advice and to witness acts of royal administration, such as grants of charters and church benefices, new laws, and royal decisions on taxation, foreign policy and defence.

The remains of Herluin a high ranking Anglo-Saxon Thegn are buried in the north side of the church yard.
According to the local charter dating to the reign of Edward the Confessor 1042 - 1066, Herluin held Houghton as part of the royal estate, which included many other villages.
However the name Herluin is not recognised as Anglo-Saxon, so it is most likely that the foreign chronicles entered the Frankish version of the Thegns name.

We aim to represent the warrior class of the late 10th Century, from the ruling Thegn and his household to the peasant warrior serving in the defence of his local area.
At this time, the Thegn and most of his inner circle would be from a Danish background, with a few trusted Saxon men of rank.
Their tenants are broadly Saxon, but with some signs of the prolonged Danish influence visible in their dress, jewelry, and customs.
