Topic: Their Own Desire

In the News (Wed 8 Oct 08)

Open to Desire - Mark Epstein - Penguin Group (USA)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Desire is a teacher: When we immerse ourselves in it without guilt, shame or clinging, it can show us something special about our own minds that allows us to embrace life fully.
While the tendency of desire to fragment, to split itself into lower and higher, instinctual and spiritual, or human and divine, is the subtext of the tale, desire’s ability to resolve these splits is the story’s essence.
For desire, in its paradoxical nature, in its ability to simultaneously breach and maintain the space between lovers, in the way it both connects and separates, and in the manner in which it forces us to reconcile love and hate, is often as close as we come to liberation in our regular lives.

A simple desire, as the one identified by common language, is therefore described as a ''first-order desire'' at this regard.
Their lives are spread out over a rather long period, from the XVIIth to the XXth centuries, and that allows us to have a vision of evolution of the definition of freedom.
Starting from their ideas, we could expose their own conception of freedom, which led us to call into question our own definitions and perceptions of freedom.

Introduction to Jacques Lacan, Module on Desire
Desire, in other words, has little to do with material sexuality for Lacan; it is caught up, rather, in social structures and strictures, in the fantasy version of reality that forever dominated our lives after our entrance into language.
It is that lack at the heart of desire that ensures we continue to desire.
To come too close to our object of desire threatens to uncover the lack that is, in fact, necessary for our desire to persist, so that, ultimately, desire is most interested not in fully attaining the object of desire but in keeping our distance, thus allowing desire to persist.

 Desire: Gift of the Spirit
Desire is intimately associated with our capacity to love, hence has a particular association with erotic power, and a feeling of attraction toward or aversions from objects, people, and ideas.
One’s deepest desire is to be a mother and be pregnant; the other lives to make a contribution to society and is presently studying to be a pediatrician.
At the heart of rape lies the desire to gain power over another human being and may be used to meet a number of needs that have little to do with real sexual desire, much less love.

 mimetic desire
The desire that the subject has for the object is nothing else but the desire he has for the prestige that he attributes to the one who possesses the object (or who [begins to] desire the object at the same time as him).
The concept of homosocial desire alludes linguistically to homosexual practices, but Sedgwick warns that it should not be thought of as synonymous with them; homosexual behavior is but one position along the continuum of social practices that a theory of homosocial desire seeks to situate.
Sedgwick identifies the strategies of homosocial desire as "erotic triangles," relationships in which there is rivalry between two active members (often, but not exclusively, two males) for the attentions and/or affections of a "beloved" third.

The identity of self and its specific set of desires, in particular, are not created by oneself, as is suggested by the myth of solipsism, but are determined by the social-linguistic matrix of relations prescribed by the system of signifiers.
Floating signifiers are words that have no essential meaning of their own, but acquire their meaning through linkage to a relational matrix unified by a particular ideology.

OFCGJ: Newsletter Article: Women and Desire: Beyond Wanting to Be Wanted
That women might be driven by the desire to be desirable, rather than by the desire to be known and loved, became the background music for much that I heard about female desire both in and out of psychotherapy for the next ten years.
The compulsion to be desired and desirable undermines self-direction, self-confidence, and self-determination in women from adolescence through old age, in all our roles, from daughter to mother, from lover to wife, from student to worker or leader, whether or not the affliction is conscious.
Anne's compulsion to be desirable begins with the fundamental belief that power -- the right, capacity, or authority to act or influence others on her behalf -- is not legitimately hers but resides in the eye of the beholder.
