Their Satanic Majesties Request is a psychedelic rock album by The Rolling Stones recorded and released in 1967.
Released in December 1967, Their Satanic Majesties Request was not well-received, being often viewed as a pretentious, poorly conceived attempt to outdo The Beatles and Sgt.

Rolling Stone : "Satanic Majesties" a Bust
Their Satanic Majesties Request, despite moments of unquestionable brilliance, put the status of the Rolling Stones in jeopardy.
They have been far too influenced by their musical inferiors and the result is an insecure album in which they try too hard to prove that they too are innovators, and that they too can say something new.
Hence they have adopted as their motto "We make art." Unfortunately, in rock there seems to be an inverse ratio between the amount of striving there is to make art and the quality of the art that results.

Their Satanic Majesties Request was a really fun moment, and there were some good songs on it: She's a Rainbow was very pretty.

Like all their work, this album has its parodic side - the 3-D double-fold cover, for example - but as always, the intonations of Jagger's voice are decisive, and as always, they imply a critical distance from the material.

"Satanic Majesties" was probably the Stones' least commercial album, filled with weird eastern drones, psychedelia-drenched chantings about (inner and outer) space, and arcane instrumentals like "Gomper".
Most people quickly forget it, but not these guys: they've put together a tribute that goes it one better, bringing it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 28 years.
For many of the group's fans, this is their finest hour.

Well, I heard about these guys (or at least their frontman) when I read about the docu-drama "Dig" featuring Courtney Taylor (of the Dandy Warhols) narrating the life and times of a couple of up and coming (sort of) alt-rock bands in the mid 90's.
Yes, their sound is soaked in the tradition of sixties psychedelia, but I have a feeling their music won't sound dated at all 40 years from now.

This scene was not new to Brian Jones (he was busted twice for drugs during the making of "Their Satanic Majesties Request"), but clearly for the rhythm and blues purest defining the music of the time with psychedelic phrasings would not have been to his liking.
In fact, the "excuse" that was given for his leaving the band was the he was not seeing eye-to-eye with group members on the direction that the music was going in: "I want to play my kind of music, which is no longer Stones music".

Part druggy experiment, part musical rivalry with the Fab Four, and a total anomaly in the Rolling Stones' catalogue, THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST contains at least three trippy classics in "Citadel", "She's a Rainbow", and "2000 Light Years From Home".
That it also contains an extensive sample of Bill Wyman snoring and an eight-minute stoned jam that begins with the timeless phrase "Where's that joint?" is a measure of SATANIC MAJESTIES' breadth of genius and folly.
The fact that Jagger and Richards could still come up with the unimpeachably charming "She's a Rainbow"--baroque pop at its finest--and a fair stab at heavy R&B in "The Lantern", while attempting to negotiate the band's rocky passage through Flower Power is a tribute to their vision, their perseverance, and their drugs of choice.

Without a doubt, no Rolling Stones album -- and, indeed, very few rock albums from any era -- split critical opinion as much as the Rolling Stones' psychedelic outing.
The downfall of the album was caused by some weak songwriting on the lesser tracks, particularly the interminable psychedelic jam "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)." It's a much better record than most people give it credit for being, though, with a strong current of creeping uneasiness that undercuts the gaudy psychedelic flourishes.

Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their their rock-and-roll-circus spirit.
Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

On the other hand, the dilated and distorted End Of The Day and the instrumental vortex of Outback show that he would be equally successful at crafting apocalyptic textures that basically have no rhythm at all.
Whether because of ineptitude or design, the BJM differ from other psychedelic revival groups in that their approach is rather amateurish, awkward and chaotic, closer to the ethos of the punks than to the pathos of the hippies.
