Therion - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Given the brilliance of this album and Theli, it is a darned shame the band would turn into the musical equivalent of strained vegetables by the year 2000.
While I have a greater warmth toward's 1997's Theli, which simply went over the top with the operatics and choirs and whatnot, Symphony Masses is required listening for anyone wishing to explore Therion in full.
Overall, there is an excellence to Theli unparalled by most of today's pioneering bands fail to meet.

Encyclopaedia Metallum - Reviews for Therion (Swe) - Theli
Theli is an outstanding album with a very original concept.
Theli is a meadow flowers waiting to be picked, and when picked and put in a vase, never fades, never withers.
And now Theli is something of the definition of symphonic metal and has inspired tons of bands.

 Amazon.co.uk: Music: Vovin
On the whole, the album is impressive and is worth buying, but it lacks the power and the strength that Theli had.
If you have never heard Therion, but are venturing here from a background in Metal, then most certainly you must get Theli as your first Therion album.
Theli was one piece of music, while this is many.

 Amazon.ca: Music: Theli
My first introduction to Therion was via "Secret of the Runes" (another great album), and I've enjoyed stepping back in time to "Theli," an album full of songs that bridge the gap between death metal and opera.
"Theli" falls right in the middle of Therion's transformation from straight-out death metal band to a fusion of operatic/choir metal.
Any Therion CDs from before "Theli" will lean more towards what you'd expect from death metal, while follow-up's like "Vovin" will phase out the death growls in place of more orchestral work.

To the fans of the genre, Therion’s mid-period material since the bands inception in 1990, albums such as 1996's Theli and 1998's Vovin are regarded as embodying some of the best material the band has to offer.
If you are looking for a more headbanging opera metal experience, then the more dynamic Theli is the album of choice.
I like Theli a lot, but I LOVE Vovin even more!

 Therion biography @ Tartareandesire.com
Their fifth album called Theli was very different from their first ones - Christofer finally had the budget to do the kind of album he had been dreaming of doing for years but didn't have the possibility to record it until now.
If you're a real metal fan you will probably like all their albums, otherwise the latest ones, beginning with Theli, are of supremely best quality.
The first four albums are musically in death metal style but the band still developed all the time, adding new elements to their music for each new release - clean male vocals, arabic folk music, classic music and industrial.

 Reviews for Vovin
In my view this album is better than Theli
more refined than theli in the sense that it uses orchestral arrangements, a lot more choirs, etc.
Well if you like the mix between classical music, guitars, bass and drums you should love this album.

However, in opposite of that Carbonized was a project done by Therion members as many people have though, all members of Carbonized was later picked up by me to join Therion (Piotr did 4 albums with Therion and Lars one - THELI).
Not many people could stand this album and nor could the record company - the album was recorded 1992 and later re-mixed january -93, but wasn't released until 1996!
Liers in Wait is the band of the famous metal cover painter Kristian Wahlin (Therion, Tiamat, Bathory, Dissection, Atheist + many many more).

 Therion: album reviews and ratings
"Therion's rise to the top of the gothic and metal scenes started with their breakthrough album Theli (1996).
" Therion begun as a death metal band and it's very hard to believe when you hear their very innovative album of 1997, Theli.
While the classical arrangements on Theli were orchestra samples played by a keyboard, Vovin has a real string ensemble.

Metal-Rules.com: THERION - Live at DirecTV Music Hall Concert Reviews
Therion's release Theli is one of my all-time favorite albums, and I think it's one of the best records released in the nineties.
From THELI, they also played on the first part of the gig the almighty "In the Desert of Set".
The next song was "The Invocation of Naamah", from THELI.

 Therion - Theli - review @ Tartareandesire.com
The oriental touch is still there but the music is much more elaborate and advanced and "Theli" would be the real breakthrough album for the band.
Despite a few minor flaws, "Theli" stands as one of the finer metal releases of the 90s and should definitely find its way to your record collection.
Christofer still dared using his voice on "Theli" although his voice isn't really perfectly suited for death metal growling nor clean singing.

 Marcus Karlsson's Therion Page
The two first songs are also featured in their full-length album "Theli", both in a different version though I cant hear the difference.
It's a bit more Arabic influenced then before and softer to listen to, but you will like it if you liked Theli.
The only sad thing in my opinion is that they have wasted the aggressive male vocals they used to have in favor for operatic ones exclusively.

Therion Interview 3/99--from Satan Stole My Teddybear
Lepaca Kliffoth was the smooth transition, and then they gave us what many consider to be the album of the decade: Theli broke new ground in terms of incorporating classical music into the rigid stylings of heavy metal.
The Theli cover was done by a guy called Peter Gron and it is a cyber version of the egyptian god Set, which I thought would fit in.
Even from the early death metal years, it was apparent that they were no generic play-brutal-for-fun headbangers: Of Darkness, Beyond Sanctorum and Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas are some of the most intelligent and challenging works ever to come out of death metal.

Encyclopaedia Metallum - Reviews for Therion (Swe) - Vovin
In a nutshell, this album is basically a compromise between the intense ass-kicking that was Theli and the operatic Ayreon worship that was A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming.
Where Theli was heavy and synthbased, Secret of the Runes centered around guitars and Deggial, well a symphony, Vovin is string orchestra metal.
If we disregard A’arab Zaraq — Lucid Dreaming, which wasn’t really a full-length par se, this is Theli’s follow-up.
