 TV Land - Good Times
Good Times follows the challenges and joys of the close-knit Evans family--patriarch James, mother Florida, eldest son and accomplished amateur painter J.J. (James Evans, Jr.), brainy and beautiful daughter Thelma, and youngest son Michael, a political and social activist--who live together in a high-rise housing project on the South Side of Chicago.
With ratings in decline, Good Times was pulled from the CBS schedule, and the last original episode aired on August 1, 1979.
In a television landscape populated almost exclusively by prosperous white characters living in idealized settings, and where black families were always presented as somehow broken or fractured, Good Times was the first prime-time series that featured a strong black man at the head of a close-knit lower-middle-class black family.

Add to the mix boy-crazy daughter Thelma (BernNadette Stanis), preadolescent black activist Michael (Ralph Carter), and Florida's world-wise best friend Willona (sassy Janet DuBois), and you've got one of the best comic ensembles of the time.
But while Walker's James "J.J." Evans Junior became the most famous face of Good Times, the bedrock of the sitcom were the actors playing his parents, Esther Rolle and John Amos as Florida and James Evans, two good-hearted but fallible people struggling to raise their family amid the poverty of the Chicago projects.
Plot: A devoted married couple (Rolle and Amos) and their three children (Walker, Stanis, and Carter) make a life for themselves inside an inner-city Chicago housing project during the '70s.
