Themes differ from motifs in that themes are ideas conveyed by a text, while motifs are repeated symbols that represent those ideas.
Themes arise from the interplay of the plot, the characters, and the attitude the author takes to them, and the same story can be given very different themes in the hands of different authors.
The term theme may be used in the same way to refer to works of theatre and film.

In addition to being included on the Monthly Theme Index website, all submissions are also added to the respective member's main Index on either the main IWVPA Website or on the IWVPA Club Index; which location will depend on the member's interpretation of the theme.

 Theme in Literary Fiction
All works of literature have a theme, even if (in the case of many modernist and postmodern works) it is only that life is ultimately meaningless.

In most cases it is not possible to reduce a theme down to one word, but a theme should be some abstract principle rather than simply a synopsis of the plot.

The Practice and Theory of Canadian Thematic Criticism   (Site not responding. Last check: )
This conception of literary theme was author-centred: theme was the principle by which a work had been organized or the axis along which it was developed.
While themes may be brought into existence by the individual reader's recognition of them, they may become more important when readers and writers become communally conscious of a body of themes - and of their shared awareness of those themes - as happened, for example, in the creation of Renaissance courtly love poetry.
One problem, therefore, with the past critiques of themes has been their failure to recognize that such namings of themes were always already themselves culturally marked, and that the critics' statements need to be understood as themselves part of a larger discourse, situated within national or cultural contexts.

Theme is generally defined as the main point or central argument of a literary work, but in many works--perhaps in most works--there is more than a single theme.
In literature, themes are seldom "messages" or "lessons." A literary work obviously written to teach a lesson is considered didactic, a term that implies inferiority (although fables and parables are an exception--their purpose is to convey a lesson).
Themes should not be expressed as "cliches": A stitch in time saves nine; you reap what you sow; the early bird gets the worm.
