Goldberg Variations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, is a theme and variations by Johann Sebastian Bach, originally written for the harpsichord but nowadays frequently performed on the piano.
Variations 13, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, and 28 are specified in the score for two manuals, whilst variations 5 and 29 are specified as playable with either one or two.
This is the first of the variations in a minor key, and is in sharp contrast to the ecstatic mood of the previous variation, thus marking the "turning point" of the piece as a whole.

There are some theme and variations cycles that are known to us by title only, the music itslef seems to have been lost.
As a rule, the minor mode variation is the penultimate one; so a full quotation of the theme at this point serves the purpose of recalling the melody which in preceding variations was treated gradually freely.
The quotation of the theme in the third variation stops this progress for a while as it serves as a slow movement in a three movement form.

 Musical Forms - Variation
In the 18th and 19th centuries the theme was usually stated first, followed by a number of variations hence the expression 'theme and variations'.
Variations of the early 19th century fall into two groups: 'formal variations' of the Viennese Classical type and 'character variations' determined by the new ideals and imagery of Romanticism.
His Handel Variations for piano represent the metrically strict continuous variation type with final fugue; the bass is the sustaining element, as in the finales of the Fourth Symphony and the St. Antony Variations.

Then, as the variation generator runs (to the specifications of the current plan), new possibilities or limitations that may be discovered are fed back to the form designer.
Thus if a variation strays too far it might be erased, or the next variation might be constrained to compensate for this by strongly resembling the melody.
That aside, the number of possible variations by this definition is a function of the number of discrete musical properties recognized.

Theme & Variations, Vol. 1: Improvisations On Children's Songs
In comparison to other themes, children's songs by their very nature are short and simple in harmony, and as such less suited to large scale renditions.
Hence Lehrndorfer has chosen the classical form of the variation to express the various aspects and moods of a song, whether it be the dance of the peasants and of the be-ba-bootsyman, the flight of the fox from the hunter in pursuit, or the twittering of birds in the wood in Cuckoo.
The theme which often just shimmers through in skeletal form is the starting point for moods and atmospheres that are conveyed in rhapsodic fashion.

Perhaps evolving from the earlier call and response, theme and variations is still the bread and butter for the modern improvising musician of American music.
The theme of the composition sets the artistic mood, provides the musical form, a tonality and overall emotional environment, which when all combined, create what I like to call a performance vehicle.
Well, in one traditional approach to performing jazz and blues tunes, the theme of the selected composition is stated to set the mood of the music and to establish the basic framework of musical form and basic harmony for the improvisations.
