  THEMIS
THEMIS should determine without ambiguity the area of release of the under-storms and study the modes of reconfiguration of the magnetotail.
The THEMIS project is a NASA mission of five satellites which instruments were designed by American scientists and in which French laboratories took part.
The main objective of THEMIS is to determine without ambiguity the place of release and the nature of the macroscopic process (reconnection or interruption of current) responsible for the substorms, to study their relations of causality and to characterize the propagation and their couplings.

NASA's Solar System Exploration: News & Events: 06.15.06: Near Constant Scale of the Gas Planet Satellite Systems
While individual satellite properties vary, the systems all share a striking similarity: the total mass of each satellite system compared to the mass of its host planet is very nearly a constant ratio, roughly 1:10,000.
Using both numerical simulations and analytical estimates of the growth and loss of satellites, the team shows that multiple generations of satellites were likely, with today's satellites being the last surviving generation that formed as the planet's growth ceased and the gas disk dissipated.
The team's direct simulations are also the first to produce satellite systems similar to those of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus in terms of number of satellites, their largest masses and the spacings of the large satellite orbits.

Since the ASTER and THEMIS instruments have very similar spatial and spectral resolutions in the VNIR and TI, data from ASTER can be used as an ideal analog for THEMIS data in studies of certain surface features, such as craters.
