Theo van Doesburg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Theo van Doesburg was born as Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper on August 30 1883 in Utrecht as the son of the photographer Wilhelm Küpper and Henrietta Catherina Margadant.
After the split Van Doesburg launched a new concept for his art: Elementarism, which was characterized by the diagonal lines and rivalled with Mondrian's Neo-Plasticism.
Van Doesburg had other activities apart from painting and promoting De Stijl: he made efforts in architecture, designing houses for artists, together with Georges Vantongerloo and he designed the decoration for the Café Aubette in Strasbourg.

This contrasted with van Doesburg, whose irritability was expressed in more directly aggressive verbal outbursts, which though quickly forgotten by himself would leave lasting wounds in those affected.
Of course, because the years 1926-28 were spent by van Doesburg largely in Strasbourg working on the design of the interior of the Cafe Aubette, this precluded any great personal contact between the two men.
Mondrian was deeply affected by the early death of Does and wrote a piece for the van Doesburg commemorative issue of De Stijl in 1931.

From 1921 to 1923, when he taught at the Weimar Bauhaus, Doesburg's painting style was much influenced by the aesthetic of neoplasticism of Piet Mondrian [07 Mar 1872 – 01 Feb 1944].
Thereafter he concentrated on landscape and genre painting, in which he was greatly influenced by such 17th-century Dutch masters as Aelbert Cuyp, the van Ostade brothers, Adriaen van de Velde, and Karel Dujardin, all artists enjoying a tremendous vogue and high prices in Paris at that time.
Together with Theo van Doesburg he founded the magazine De Stijl in 1917.
