THEOBALD - LoveToKnow Article on THEOBALD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the first edition of the Dunciad (1728) Theobald figured as the hero, and he occupied the place of chief victim until replaced by Colley Gibber in 1741.
From 1729 to the date of its publication Theobald had been engaged in correspondence on the subject with War-burton, who after his friend's death published an edition of Shakespeare, in the preface of which he asserted that Theobald owed his best corrections to him.
Theobald gave proof of the same happy gift in classical scholarship in some emendations of Aeschylus, Eustathius, Athenaeus and others, contributed to a learned journal started by John Jortin in 1731.

Theobald has a problem grasping the difference between what is a prediction of the theory of universal common ancestry (the proposition for which he is arguing) and what are expectations based on assumptions that have been added to that theory.
Theobald understandably seeks to divert the discussion away from the accuracy of his statements that there are “no morphological gaps” in the alleged dinosaur-to-bird transition and that there is an “exquisitely complete series of fossils” for the alleged reptile-to-mammal transition.

Chapter Chapter 12 of The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler
Theobald, however, had not been kindled by Christina's enthusiasm, so she fell back upon the Church of Rome - an enemy more dangerous, if possible, than paganism itself.
At other times Christina pictured herself and Theobald as braving the scorn of almost every human being in the achievement of some mighty task which should redound to the honour of her Redeemer.
In the spring of 1831, more than five years after Theobald had first walked over to Crampsford, one of the best livings in the gift of the College unexpectedly fell vacant, and was for various reasons declined by the two fellows senior to Theobald, who might each have been expected to take it.
