Leading the surrounded German 9th Army, Colonel General Theodor Busse tried to link up with the German 12th Army commanded by General Walther Wenck with the intention of heading west and surrendering to the Western Allies.
Busse ordered von Luck to stay near Baruth but discontinue the attack when informed of this, however von Luck disobeyed the order and disbanded his battle group, allowing soldiers to try and attempt a breakout individually.

General von Manteuffel had his 3rd Panzer Army to defend Berlin’s north, General Theodor Busse had the 9th Army to defend Berlin’s east and Field Marshal Ferdinand Schörner was to defend Berlin’s south and west.
German General Karl Weidling brought in Busse’s last reserves (the 56th Panzer Corps) which actually slowed down the Soviets enough to make Stalin change his tanks’ directions northward.

Battle for Berlin: April — May 1945
As a result, Stalin ordered Koniev to direct his armoured forces directly at Berlin with the result that two Soviet Fronts were advancing for the city.
All this proved too much for General Theodor Busse's 9th Army and by 20 April, the German forces defending the approaches to Berlin had been overrun or routed, with Zhukov having cracked the three defensive lines in the Oder-Neisse area and had taken the Seelöw Heights and Müncheberg.
Berlin was completely encircled by the 25 April, as was Busse's 9th Army and elements of General F. Gräser's 4th Panzer Army, in the area between Lübben, Zossen and Beeskow.

For this book, Newton has done his own translations and editing, and he offers extensive annotations.
He starts with an overview of Operation Citadel by General Theodor Busse, and then follows with more specific reports -- Armeeabteilung Kempf (Gen. Raus), Fourth Panzer Army (Fangohr), Ninth Army and Second Panzer Army (von der Groeben), Luftflotte Six (Kless), Luftflotte Four (Seidemann), and railroad transportation (Col. Teske).
In the second part of the book, the focus becomes more tactical looking at XXXV Corps east of Orel (Rendulic), XX Corps on the defense (von Roman), XI Corps in the battles for Belgorod and Kharkov (Raus), and the Sixth Army defense of the Mius River line (Maj. Francke).
