Theodor Fontane's 1895 novel, "Effi Briest," is the moving and melancholy story of Effi, a sprightly teenage girl whose limited interactions with society and the moral bearings of that society are brought into direct and terrible conflict.
Fontane forces a look at the Prussian involvement in empire-building projects of the nineteenth century, as well as the debilitating effects of indiscriminate secularization; "Effi Briest" depicts a culture alternately hungry for and wary of romance and enchantment, caught between occasional fascination with the newer world and the comforts of burgeoning technology at home.
Fontane does a good job of showing how people produce tragedies when they allow their lives to be dictated by society instead of quelling the thirst in their souls and what happens to childish spirits stuck in the adult world.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Theodor Fontane
Theodor Fontane was the prominent German nineteenth-century realist writer, famous for his understated and allusive conversational style, his astute society portraits and ambivalent stance towards social transgression.
As a travel writer, war correspondent, theatre critic, novelist and poet, he was the only author of this period whose works both captured the social and emotional parochialism of nineteenth-century German life and, at the same time, showed the salons and clever economic manoeuvres of the bourgeoisie in the new capital Berlin, Germany’s first metropolis.
Fontane was born on 30 December 1819 in Neuruppin, a small town north-west of Berlin, as the first child of Louis Henri Fontane and Emilie Fontane, née Labry.

 BookRags: Theodor Fontane Biography
Theodor Fontane is generally considered the most significant realistic novelist of the German-speaking countries.
For these lands Fontane consummated the development of the type of novel, the Gesellschaftsroman (novel of society), that is characteristic of such great European realists as Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, and Leo Tolstoy.
Fontane also paved the way for modernist trends in the novel genre: as the plots of his novels became more and more spare, he placed them more and more in the background and emphasized conversations among characters, who are grouped in socially and symbolically significant constellations.

Significant developments in Fontane criticism are traced in historical context, from their beginnings in contemporary commentary to the present day.
The author places special emphasis on scholarship since 1980, analysing the influence of new literary critical trends in this period; she also considers the effect upon traditional literary criticism of feminism, psychoanalysis, and comparatist approaches, and the fresh developments in reception history, translation, and media studies.

 Theodor Storm: Introduction
STORM, Theodor Woldsen (Husum, Schleswig, 1817-88 Hademarschen, Holstein), studied law, which he practised for the greater part of his life in his native Husum before his retirement, in 1880, from his office as Amtsgerichtsrat.
He was impatient both of the privileged nobility and of Prussia, and this antagonism did not diminish during the years spent in Prussian service; his contacts in Berlin with the literary club 'Der Tunnel Über der Spree', and notably with Theodor Fontane, sharpened his northern individualism, though they stimulated his development as a writer.
Storm formed a friendship with Theodor and his brother Tycho Mommsen at school, and the three were joint editors of the Liederbuch dreier Freunde (1843).

Storms have been a recurring key and often tragic feature of North Frisian history dating back to 1164, the most severe occurring in 1362, the ‘Grote Manndränke’, and in 1634 the ‘Zweite Manndränke’, during which many thousands of people lost their lives; livestock and homes perished and the coastline of North Friesland was changed forever.
The personal consequences for Theodor Storm of the defeat were to be serious resulting in his eventual political exile in 1852.
