Dutch physician/gynæcologist Theodor Hendrik van de Velde (1873 - 1937) was Director at the Gynæcological Institute in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
Although van de Velde gained international repute, today he is virtually unknown in encyclopædias and on the Internet (according to a search in Dec. 2003).
Theodor Hendrik van de Velde certainly deserves recognition as an early advocate for knowledge and sensuality in erotic life.

Theodor Reik was born in Vienna in 1888.
In 1938 the tread of Nazi take-over caused Dr. Reik to leave the Netherlands, where he was in private practice and lecturing at the University in Leiden.
Theodor Reik was a protege, student, and liflong friend of Sigmund Freud.

Van de Velde wrote in all seriousness that it was only possible for a women to orgasm when a man ejaculated inside her.
Such piffle probably did as much damage in the 20th century as Sigmund Freud’s bizarre 1905 idea that the clitoral orgasm in women is “infantile” and there was something wrong with any woman who didn’t have the “mature” vaginal orgasm in regular penetrative sex.

He is the author of the revolutionary sex manual Perfect Marriage.
Velde broke away from the moralizing duscussion of the standard missionary position and sexual behavior in general.
He described 10 different positions for intercourse and dared to advocate the 'genital kiss' as an acceptable part of foreplay.

The Dutch gynecologist Theodor Hendrik van de Velde publishes his book "Ideal Marriage", a very popular work of adult sex education which tries to encourage men and women to shed their inhibitions within their sexual relationships and to develop their sensuality.
