Theodor Uppman, the American baritone who has died aged 85, was a principal singer at the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1955 to 1978; in 1951 he was chosen by Benjamin Britten to create the title-role of Billy Budd at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, that December.
Uppman had sung a small role in a Broadway musical directed by Alfred Drake in the summer of 1951, and had then gone to work at a Californian aviation plant when his opera career seemed to be stalled.
Uppman's gift of personal involvement in whatever he chose to sing, allied to clear diction and beauty of phrasing, was evident in the many roles he sang at the Met in his 23 years on its roster.

In 1951 Theodor Uppman was invited by Benjamin Britten to create the title role in his opera Billy Budd at Covent Garden.
It was at a very late stage that Theodor Uppman successfully auditioned for the role.
VAI released a CD called “The Art of Theodor Uppman.” It is a collection of digitally remastered radio broadcast performances from the “Bell Telephone Hour” between 1954 and 1957.The repertoire was intended to appeal to a wide audience, ranging from folk songs arrangements (Foster, Wilder) to French and Italian opera arias.

Baritone Theodor Uppman died Thursday night in his Manhattan home; he was 85.
Although Monteux became his mentor, Uppman was frustrated in his singing career, singing rather minor roles in San Francisco, so much that he quit and took up manual labor.
Later, Uppman also created roles in Carlisle Floyd's Passion of Jonathan Wade and Thomas Pasatieri's Black Widow, went on to teach voice at the Mannes College of Music and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
