A Toast to the Suave Man
Theodora Lynn, pushing forty, is a mousey virgin so rigid you could shave with the crease on her skirt.
You know that she is about to blow because Theodora, played by Irene Dunn in her first comedic role, is the main character of the 1936 screwball comedy, Theodora Goes Wild.
When I experienced an erotic charge watching Michael’s seduction of Theodora, this felt surpassingly strange, as if I’d picked up a shard of hieroglyphic text and, immediately and without prior training, had been able to penetrate—and be penetrated by—the mysteries of a long-dead civilization, one I’d never visited, inscribed therein.

Having followed Grant to New York, Theodora made it her business to show Grant that he was in the same predicament, only more so.

Irene Dunne is Theodora, a small town girl whose family's rigid morals prevent her from claiming her fame as Catherine Adams, the writer of a racy best seller.
However, when she goes to New York to speak with her publisher, she meets a man played by Melvyn Douglas who follows her home and causes her to erupt with the truth about herself.
She sits at home with her two aunts, Elisabeth Risdon (Mary) and Margaret McWade (Elsie) goes to church every Sunday, as does the rest of the town, she fishes, and picks berries, and is part of local activies.

The ease with which she carried off comic roles can be seen in the hilarious Theodora Goes Wild, 1936 - the tale of a small town girl who secretly writes a scandalous best-seller.
Irene Dunne fought against doing the film and, in fact, even went so far as to travel to Europe for two months in the hope that this would get her out of the movie.
Luckily for us, this ruse did not succeed and Theodora Goes Wild brought her second Oscar nomination, although again she lost out.

Dunne was finally permitted to show off her singing talents in Sweet Adeline (1935), and in 1936 Universal Pictures cast her in her stage role as Magnolia in the studio's definitive film version of Show Boat (1936).
After Show Boat, Dunne entered the second phase of her movie career as a comedienne, contributing hilarious performances to such screwball farces as Theodora Goes Wild (1936), The Awful Truth (1937), and My Favorite Wife (1940).
It was back to dramatic roles in the early 1940s, and as age crept up on Dunne, she made a seamless transition to starring character roles in such films as Anna and the King of Siam (1946) and Life with Father (1947).

Signed by Hollywood, she made a career in the sentimental women’s pictures called “weepers” as well as a musical or two, recreating her stage role in the first filmed version (by Frankenstein’s James Whale) of Show Boat, and sang endless choruses of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” in the Astaire-Rogers Roberta.
Her debut as a screwball comedy heroine came in Theodora Goes Wild (1936) where she played a demure authoress who writes a racy best-seller and comes to the big city, learning how to enjoy herself under the tutelage of Melvyn Douglas.
She spent two months in Europe evading Theodora, hoping the studio would lose interest in casting her in a comedy.

Interesting, too, is that Irene Dunne, in the comedy lead, was first brought out as a celluloid comedienne by Columbia in 'Theodora Goes Wild.' She tops that performance by almost an Alp in 'Awful Truth,' and Cary Grant, opposite, is flagged in on his best fast light-comedy performance to date.
Miss Dunne goes vocal several times, once impersonating a phony Deep Dixie warbler (Joyce Compton), who works out a burlesque song in a night club sequence.

Her lyrical inflections and very musical voice (she was a classically trained vocalist) lent a merry spark to every film she ever made.
Mired in heavy melodramas and tearjerkers in the early '30s, Irene's comic talents leaped from the screen for the first time in the sublimely silly "Theodora Goes Wild" in 1936.
From that point on, she was widely recognized as one of the screen's finest and funniest comediennes, and her particular brand of subtle hilarity lit up the screen in films like The Awful Truth (1937), the original Love Affair (1939), and My Favorite Wife (1940).

Irene basically had to lead two lives, so for each one I say this: She's the most wonderful Hollywood role model I've ever come across, and the same goes for her in private life, when she was Mrs.
She was so versatile, and to me, she was herself in each film as though she lived the story.
Some truth to that lies in these films: Theodora Goes Wild, and Penny Serenade.

Kentucky-born Dunne carved a successful career in musical comedy before entering films in 1930 (she starred as Magnolia in Show Boat, 1936), and was in the first rank of sympathetic screen heroines throughout the 1930s.
She suffered gracefully through several sentimental, sometimes tragic, love stories, famously including Back Street (1932), Magnificent Obsession (1935), and Love Affair (1939), but also revealed an exceptional aptitude for comedy in such films as Theodora Goes Wild (1936) and The Awful Truth (1937).
She received her fifth Oscar nomination for I Remember Mama (1947) which, together with Life with Father (1948), marked her last big successes.
