Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick was born in New York City on July 7, 1930 to Theodore Egan McCarrick and Margaret McLaughlin.
McCarrick to New York to serve as associate secretary for education and an assistant priest at Blessed Sacrament parish from 1969-1971 and then as the Cardinal’s Secretary from 1971-1977.
As Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal McCarrick served as chancellor of The Catholic University of America and president of the Board of Trustees of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and placed an emphasis on education, vocations and meeting the needs of new immigrants, particularly in the Latino community.

I did speak to the cardinal while I was here in Rome, and I think the cardinal would say that what he wanted to say is what was in the document.
The cardinal's position was that this is the teaching of the church, and the bishops of the United States should figure out what they ought to do.
I think that what the cardinal is saying that if someone has taken an unambiguous position that is contrary to the teaching of the church, and recognizes this as such, he should take himself away, he should not receive communion.

The greater problem that Cardinal McCarrick delved into, was using their words of worship, and failing to make a distinction that while God in Arabic is Allah, the Christian God is NOT the same as the Allah of Islam.
If Cardinal McCarrick had an orthodox understanding of what he was saying and taught that way it would be one thing.
The problem I have with the Cardinal's words is his invocation of "Allah, the merciful and compassionate." This is formulaic for a Moslem, and comes straight from the Koran.
