  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Dogmatic Theology
In his character as historian, the theologian must not lay aside his belief in the supernatural origin of Christianity and in the Divine institution of the Church, if he is to give a true and objective account of tradition, of the history of dogma, and of patrology.
In treating of the Divine will, theologians insist on God's freedom in His external activity, and when discussing the problem of evil, they prove that God can intend sin neither as an end nor as a means to an end, but merely permits it for reasons both holy and wise.

 The Shaking of the Foundations
We considered the theologian as a believer in spite of his doubt and despair, and as a member of the Church, in whose power all theological work is done, in spite of his lack of certainty.
The theologian uses realism and becomes a positivist to the positivists, a pragmatist to the pragmatists, and a tragic interpreter of life to the tragic interpreters of life.
The real theologian is he who has the strength to perceive and to confess his weakness, and who, therefore, has the strength to become as weak to the weak, so that his is the victory.

Theology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Theology generally assumes the truth of at least some religious beliefs and is therefore often distinguished from the philosophy of religion, which does not presume the truth of any religious beliefs.
(For instance, a conservative theologian will tend to correlate the claims they find in their religious scriptures about particular events in the past with the kind of description of the past allowed by historical criticism, arguing at least for compatibility between the two descriptions and possibly for some stronger relationship.
More generally, however, many theologians consider that, because the topics considered in theology touch on the theologians' deepest commitments and beliefs, it is impossible to study theology with complete detachment: the study of theology is "self-involving" in a way that makes some kinds of objectivity difficult.

The theologian cooperates with the Pope and the Bishops in the preparation of documents and the presentation of aspects of faith and morals.
The genuine theologian is marked by deep faith in God, in Jesus Christ the Son of God made man, and in the Church that Christ founded.
Above all, the theologian, apart from intellectual competence, should be in union with God, by prayer, by regular meditation and presence before the Eucharistic Christ, and by humility in being able to say sincerely at the end of all his studies and writings: "I am just a servant of God and of the Church.

The Theologian in Modern Society (Phronema and Behaviour)
That is why, strictly speaking, the Orthodox faithful — and especially the theologian — are never entitled to call upon their conscience as the final criterion of truth, although for the humanist or the Protestant, this would be the cornerstone of honesty and ethics in general.
However, in order for the theologian to be convincing and effective in his task, it is imperative for him to possess two very basic attributes: he must be honest but, at the same time, discerning.
In order for the modern theologian to break down the barrier of suspicion, hesitation or indifference in those who will potentially listen to the word of God, the only weapon that is available in human terms is unfeigned character and honesty.

Instruction on the ecclesial vocation of theologian
The theologian must therefore be attentive to the epistemological requirements of his discipline, to the demands of rigorous critical standards, and thus to a rational verification of each stage of his research.
If, despite a loyal effort on the theologian's part, the difficulties persist, the theologian has the duty to make known to the Magisterial authorities the problems raised by the teaching in itself, in the arguments proposed to justify it, or even in the manner in which it is presented.
In cases like these, the theologian should avoid turning to the "mass media", but have recourse to the responsible authority, for it is not by seeking to exert the pressure of public opinion that one contributes to the clarification of doctrinal issues and renders servite to the truth.

"Every Man Must be a Theologian" by Dr. John H. Gerstner
A lay theologian is a person who has a true knowledge of God which he understands in nontechnical, nonprofessional, nonacademic terms.
If a theologian is a person who knows God, then by reverse reasoning a person who is not a theologian does not know God.
One theologian has written that it is not enough to “understand” but you must also “stand under.” For the truth of God is a Person — a Person who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

Pope Meets Dissident Theologian for Talks | Europe | Deutsche Welle |
The news that Pope Benedict XVI met over the weekend with the controversial Swiss theologian Hans Küng, one of the most prominent critics of the Roman Catholic Church, struck the Vatican like a bolt from the blue.
The meeting with Küng, who was banned from teaching Catholic theology by the Vatican in 1979 for questioning the pope's infallibility, took place at the pontiff's Castel Gandolfo summer residence and was held "in a friendly atmosphere," Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said.
The two former university colleagues agreed not to discuss doctrinal questions, which put the Swiss theologian at odds with Church authorities, but focused rather on the question of the role of the church in a secular world.

What is necessary, he wrote, is a new period of dialog between bishops and theologians; but not just any theologians: only those who receive the imprimatur from the Catholic Theological Society of America — an association of the most hard-core dissidents in the United States.
Most bishops, he said, will leave it up to the university to decide whether or not a professor should apply for the mandate, and most administrators will be unlikely to force the issue from fear of legal action or losing their reputation with the secular accreditation boards.
No, CUA is unique in its relationship to the Holy See and in the composition of its board of trustees… To be legally effective the requirements of the mandate would have to be put into the bylaws of each nonpontifical institution.
