St Theophan the Recluse was born on January 10, 1815, in the heart of Russia.
It was difficult for Bishop Theophan in the midst of the world and those demands to which one must yield because of human corruption.
Archbishop Nicander of Vilna described Bishop Theophan as a universal Christian teacher, even though he did not speak; a public figure, though in reclusion; a preacher of the Church who was heard everywhere, even though in his last years he appeared in no Church See.

The Spiritual Life   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Once, in the middle of the dance floor at some annual ball, a young lady had a sudden glimpse of the immortality of her soul, and as this vision flashed upon her inward eye, she was struck with the thought that all this swirling around the dance floor was utterly futile.
Amazed and disturbed, she wrote to the recluse: "Is this normal, or is it a morbid hindrance to a desire for a happy life in the world?" The answer to her question evoked a correspondence which resulted in this volume.
Theophan strove to make sure that the young soul of his correspondent would not only be familiar with the principles of spiritual life, but would first of all be able to keenly hear the right "tone" of spiritual life.

Slashdoc - Saint Theophan the Recluse
Theophan of Vysha (+1894), better known as Theophan the Recluse, is one of the great 19th century Russian luminaries of the Orthodox Church whose light reaches even unto us in the present, heterodox West.
For St. Theophan, the ground of prayer is always liturgical, not individualistic or pietistic; it is not an exercise in isolation.
This means that, even for the recluse, prayer is cradled, embraced as it were, in the arms of the liturgical life of the Church.

It was in this earlier era that Theophan, Bishop of Tambov and Shatsk (1815-1894), lived, preached, prayed, and wrote.
Theophan was glorified (canonized) by the “Tsarist” Russian Church outside of Russia in 1988.
Here he invokes govenie, “the grace-filled means for educating and strengthening the spiritual life.” Govenie refers both to the ascetic practices in preparation for the reception of the Mysteries (Sacraments) and to the receiving of the Mysteries of Penance and Communion.

Below the saints are those who repented but had no time to purify themselves and are purified by the action of the grace of penance and of the prayer of the Church of the saints perfected and glorified in Heaven.
