A Byzantine campaign in the Balkans
Theophylact Simocatta, who wrote in the early seventh century during the reign of Heraclius (Herakleios) (610-41), was the last in the succession of secular classicizing historians devoted mainly to the military, diplomatic, and political history of the Roman empire.
Theophylact's History is an account of the reign of the emperor Maurice (582-602), within which two major topics dominate the historical narrative: warfare in the Balkans against the Slavs and Avars and on the eastern frontier against the Persians.
Theophylact is biased against Peter, and his account of his actions shows him to be less skillful and energetic then he was during this campaign.

Pope John X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John X, pope from 914 to 928, was deacon at Bologna when he attracted the attention of Theodora, the wife of Theophylact, the most powerful noble in Rome, through whose influence he was elevated first to the see of Bologna and then to the archbishopric of Ravenna.
In direct opposition to a decree of council, he was also at the instigation of Theodora promoted to the papal chair as the successor of Lando.
In December 915 he granted the imperial crown to Berengar of Friuli, and with the assistance of the forces of all the princes of the Italian peninsula he took the field in person against the Saracens, over whom he gained a great victory on the banks of the Garigliano.

This reading of the letter-collection (c.1090-c.1110) of Theophylact of Ochrid employs a variety of approaches to characterize a work which is both a literary artifact in a long Greek tradition and the only trace of a complex network of friends, colleagues, patrons and clients within Byzantine Bulgaria and also within the empire as a whole.
Theophylact of Ochrid is important as an attempt to raise the status of the study of Byzantine literature, and of letters within that literature.
At the heart of the book is an analysis of the personal network of Theophylact, as presented in the collection, with further methodological discussion of network analysis in medieval texts.

It is a first attempt to place an epistolary text in a succession of literary and historical contexts; its aim, too, is to probe the reliability of any rhetorical text for straightforward biography especially at the time of the revival fiction in Byzantium.

There were two Theodoras, and the one Gibbon had in mind was not Marozia's sister but her mother; and they were certainly not prostitutes in the generally accepted sense, for they were the daughter and wife respectively of no less a person than Theophylact, the senator of Rome, civic head of the city.
Chamberlin gives a splendid description of the House of Theophylact's posession of both the Papacy and the temporal rule of Rome, and their relationship with the emperors Otto I through III.

Paul was not speaking, in the passage under consideration, of an institutional prerogative, as St. John Chrysostomos points out, but of a burden imposed on him by the nature of his ministry.
As the translator rightly observes, the verb "remit" is in the second person plural, and thus refers not to St. Peter alone, but to all of the Apostles.
Theophylact, following St. John Chrysostomos and the overwhelming consensus of both Greek and Latin Fathers, interprets the words "this rock" to denote St. Peters confession of faith in the Divinity of Christ, and not the Apostles person.

In regard to confessing Christ, Blessed Theophylact draws our attention to a significant point in the grammar of the original which is regularly blurred by most translations.
About this Theophylact says, "He means, 'Whosoever shall confess while in My strength and while I work in synergy with him, I also shall confess in My strength and while I work in him, that is, in him who works in synergy with Me." We cannot confess Christ unless we collaborate with Him.
Notice: the tiny in, the preposition, is not employed when denying is described, for in such cases certainly God is not in those who deny Him.
