Enrico Fermi Institute | Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology
Theoretical astrophysics extends into all of physical science, from elementary particles to cosmology, to surface chemistry, to hydrodynamics, and the classical theory of fields.
Thus, the Fermilab theoretical astrophysics group is headed by Edward Kolb (who is also a professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics), and pursues research at the interface of cosmology and particle physics.
Recently, members of the EFI Theoretical Astrophysics Group have concentrated on understanding the spontaneous appearance of tangential discontinuities in continuously deformed magnetic fields, as the basis for the stellar X-ray corona, and in the same context, they have studied heat transport in such a highly-magnetized medium.

Astrophysics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physical properties of stars, galaxies, and other astronomical objects.
Cosmology is theoretical astrophysics at its largest scale, involving the structure of the whole universe.
The current high status of astrophysics is reflected in the naming of institutions involved in astronomical research: the oldest ones are "astronomy" departments or institutes, the newest ones include "astrophysics" in their names, often excluding the word "astronomy".

She will be completing her 2nd year next semester and is trying to decide whether to major in mathematics or theoretical astrophysics.
At the graduate level, likely her Ph.D. will be from an astronomy dept. where theoretical astrophysics (in an area of interest) is a strong suit.
However, having a firm foundation in stellar and galactic astrophysics along with a solid course in cosmology would be highly beneficial before going to grad school to pursue research in theoretical astrophysics.

The University of Chicago is a leader in interdisciplinary research in theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, including connections to particle physics, general relativity, and computational physics.
We also have close ties to the Fermilab Theoretical Astrophysics Group, which focuses on both early- and late-universe cosmology, and the ASCI Flash Center at Chicago, which carries out numerical studies of astrophysical thermonuclear flashes.
My research is mostly in the areas of plasma astrophysics and astrophysical fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (including especially solar and stellar magnetic fields); boundary mixing instabilities; combustion modeling; applications of stochastic differential equations and optimization problems; and inverse methods.

Our department is particularly active in theoretical aspects of gamma-ray burst sources, cosmology, gravitational physics, dynamics, high energy astrophysics, neutron stars, accretion disk and atmosphere modeling, numerical relativity and astrophysics, astrostatistics and atomic and radiation processes.
Theoretical and numerical studies are being acrried out on the dynamics of galaxies and stellar systems, including systems with a central fl hole, and implications for gamma-ray bursters, pulsars, star formation and planets.
Atomic and radiation processes are being investigated in various astrophysical environments, in particular quantum mechanical calculations of electron collision processes in high Z ions of relevance for supernova remnants and fusion, as well as plasma properties, atomic structure and transition probabilities in strongly magnetized plasmas (Pavlov).

 DOCTORAL RESEARCH IN THEORETICAL ASTROPHYSICS
The Observatoire de Strasbourg (France) and the Section of Astrophysics of the Dept. of Physics of the University of Athens (Greece) are seeking a doctoral student to undertake a 3 year thesis on the subject of "Dissipative and radiative rotating MHD jets".
Such effects are important since they partly support the radiation of the jets and bear on their focusing and dynamical acceleration.
In this doctoral research, it is proposed to extend the study of astrophysical jets, both classical and relativistic, by self-consistently including in their description effects which are ignored by the standard perfect-MHD description, such as dissipation, radiative forces and heating.

The NSF and DOE have recognized the emergence of astrophysics in combination with nuclear, particle, and gravitational physics as a frontier area for basic research in the 21st century.
Given the existing strengths in the physics and mathematics departments in astrophysics, nuclear physics, gravitational physics, and computational physics, NC State is well positioned to take advantage of the new scientific opportunities associated with these instruments.
To enhance these current strengths we propose that the University create a center for theoretical astrophysics, staffed by existing faculty in physics and mathematics, and supplemented by two internationally recognized named professor hires from astrophysics and gravitational physics.
