Theoretical chemistry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Theoretical chemistry is the use of non-experimental reasoning to explain or predict chemical phenomena.
Theoretical attacks on chemical problems go back to the earliest days, but until the formulation of the Schrödinger equation by the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger, the techniques available were rather crude and speculative.
Physical chemistry and chemical physics: Chemistry investigated via physical methods like laser techniques, scanning tunneling microscope, etc. The formal distinction between both fields is that physical chemistry is a branch of chemistry while chemical physics is a branch of physics.

Chemistry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chemistry (in Greek: χημεία) is the science of matter that deals with the composition, structure, and properties of substances and with the transformations that they undergo.
Chemistry is in some ways physics on a larger scale and in some ways is biology or geology on a smaller scale.
The chemistry taught at the high school or early college level is often called "general chemistry" and is intended to be an introduction to a wide variety of fundamental concepts and to give the student the tools to continue on to more advanced subjects.

HYLE 5-2 (1999): Towards 'chemical congruence' of the models in theoretical chemistry
Chemistry has a large impact on the economical aspects of our society, plays an important role in our everyday life, from health to pollution, and pervades our scientific activities in all fields of the study of the matter, from cosmology to the investigation of living bodies.
Theoretical chemistry proposed a new approach to the coordination of efforts in the development of the discipline that was considered with skepticism by the majority of chemists.
Theoretical chemistry, as all the other scientific disciplines, has a democratic structure (Preti 1957): that means its use should not be limited to people having a peculiar high level of maturity, prudence, and self-control.

UW-Madison - Theoretical Chemistry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Theoretical chemistry seeks to explain quantitatively the physical and chemical properties of condensed matter, to relate these macroscopic properties to the properties of the individual molecules, and to predict the structure and properties of the individual molecules.
Theoretical chemistry uses computers and analytic methods for applying the fundamental laws to describe complex molecules, clusters, and condensed phases.
No longer restricted to small idealized prototype systems, theoretical chemists are increasingly to be found, in active collaboration with experimentalists, at the forefront of contemporary investigations of the structure and dynamics of complex chemical systems.

The 34th Midwest Theoretical Chemistry Conference (MTCC) is being held October 5-6, 2001 at the University of Minnesota.
Since this is the first Midwest Theoretical Chemistry Conference of the new century, the conference organizers have decided that it would be a good opportunity to try an experiment that would not necessarily be the best way to run the conference every year, but might be stimulating and worthwhile for special occasions.
This year though, to be different, we have adopted a format consisting of talks by senior scientists (faculty and senior researchers at government laboratories and in industry) and poster papers by senior scientists, postdoctoral associates, and students.
