Infinitesimal numbers were originally developed to create the differential and integral calculus, but were replaced by systems using limits when they were shown to lack theoretical rigor.
More recent work has restored rigor to infinitesimals, making them once more a powerful mathematical tool.
Systems of infinitesimals can be generated in the same way as systems of transfinite numbers can be generated.

Claude Elwood Shannon - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
This concept, of utilizing the properties of electrical switches to do logic, is the basic concept that underlies all electronic digital computers, and the thesis became the foundation of practical digital circuit design when it became widely known among the electrical engineering community during and after World War II.
Contemporaneous methods to design logic circuits at the time were ad hoc and lacked the theoretical rigor that Shannon's paper supplied to later projects.
Flush with this success, Vannevar Bush suggested that Shannon work on his dissertation at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, funded by the Carnegie Institution headed by Bush, to develop similar mathematical relationships for Mendelian genetics, which resulted in Shannon's 1940 PhD thesis at MIT, An Algebra for Theoretical Genetics.

psychoanalysis: Criticisms of and Changes in Freudian Psychoanalysis
Many objections have been leveled against traditional psychoanalysis, both for its methodological rigidity and for its lack of theoretical rigor.
A number of modern psychologists have pointed out that traditional psychoanalysis relies too much on ambiguities for its data, such as dreams and free associations.
Critics have also pointed out that Freud's theoretical models arise from a homogeneous sample group—almost exclusively upper-class Austrian women living in the sexually repressed society of the late 19th cent.

 Geometry.Net - Philosophers: Benjamin Walter
Benjamin's influence has grown steadily since his essays became available in English, and a recent flood of books about him and his writings including the charming but thin Momme Brodersen biography from Verso testifies to his continued importance.
From the start, film theorists, cultural historians, and literary critics seized upon this thinker who combined theoretical rigor and Left politics with often dramatic insights into the workings of culture generally and popular culture specifically.
Writing in a historical moment when new technologies of mass reproduction were altering the terrain of daily life, Benjamin probed the relationships between high and low culture, between Romanticism and modernity, between literature and film.
