The Theosophical Survey of India, or Theosophy Society - Adyar is a successor organization to the original Theosophical Society founded by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and others in 1875.
Adyar, an area of Chennai where its headquarters is located, traces its beginnings to 1895 and the Theosophical Society faction headed by Henry Steel Olcott and Annie Besant after the faction led by William Quan Judge left to form its own organization.
The presidents of the Theosophical Society - Adyar have included Annie Besant, Nilakanta Sri Ram, and currently Radha Burnier.

In 1895, William Quan Judge, then vice-president of the society, led a secession movement which resulted in a separation therefrom of a large number of the American and some of the European members.
The other body, known as the Theosophical Society in America, again subdivided; one division located at 244 Lenox Avenue, New York City, published The Word, a monthly magazine, and the other division, headed by Charles Johnston, 159 Warren Street, Brooklyn, N.
