Topic: Therapist

  Evaluate Therapist
Sometimes the referral to a therapist is not based on familiarity with the therapist's ability or practice; rather it may be based on a personal friendship, a mutual referral arrangement, or geographic location (such as being in the same building).
That therapist may be dealing with unresolved personal relationship issues which are influencing his or her judgment in regard to your treatment.
Therapists are in a position of power and at times try and wield that power by saying "I know what is best for you." As with any profession, there are a small percentage of bad therapists who will abuse this power.

Finding a Therapist, Psychotherapist, Counselor, "Shrink" -- a Head-Cleaners' Shrink Rap Article
Most therapists will be happy to work with a particular insurance company to take care of the needs of someone who wants to see them in particular.
The therapist may find the insurance company's procedures to be too painful to be worth getting regular referrals from it, but most therapists like to work with people being referred by friends and colleagues and most will bend over backwards to get you in.
It is the therapist's job to make you comfortable enough to talk about what you need to talk about and it is the therapist's responsibility to work with you to figure out what and how you need to change.

Finding the Right Therapist For You   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Frequently when people decide they would benefit from seeing a therapist, they are experiencing significant upset in their lives - not the ideal moment to be dealing with the stress involved in finding someone with whom it feels safe and right to be vulnerable.
Many therapists assert that problems you have had for a long time are more likely to require longer term treatment, while you can get relief fairly quickly with short-term treatment for a recently developed problem.
While it is certainly not necessary for a therapist to have personally experienced whatever you are going through, you need some reassurance that what you are bringing to the table is not beyond the scope of competence of the therapist.
