This was the last of the original ghettos to be abolished in Western Europe, when the kingdom of Italy was established in 1861 and overthrew the last of the Papal States in 1870, with the walls themselves physically being torn down in 1888.
The first large ghetto at Tuliszkow was established in December 1939 or January 1940, followed by the Lodz Ghetto in April 1940 and the Warsaw Ghetto in October 1940, with many other ghettos established throughout 1940 and 1941.
Ghettos often became known as vibrant cultural centers, for example the late 19th century Paris, or Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s.

The "Ghetto Theresienstadt" was established in NW Czechoslavakia.
The ghetto was controlled by the Zentralamt für die Regelung der Judenfrage in Böhmen und Mähren, which was under the jurisdiction of the RSHA.
The small fortress near the ghetto was used as an internment camp for political prisoners.

Almost 500 Danish Jews were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia.
Yet even of these Jews, all but 51 survived the Holocaust, largely because Danish officials pressured the Germans with their concerns for the well-being of those who had been deported.
Nearly 12,000 Jewish children were rescued by clergymen in France who found housing for them and even smuggled some into Switzerland and Spain.
