Therianthropy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Therianthropes may describe their nature manifesting in terms of their cognitive processes, their outlook on life, their inner reactions and instincts, their senses, or through their physical body, though claims of actual physical variations from the norm tend to be regarded with skepticism both within and outside the subculture.
While some therianthropes believe they can take on the mindset of their "other side" in what is referred to as a mental shift, they retain control and are no greater danger to themselves or others.
As a general rule, to an extent, therianthropes are more focused on the sense of an animal within, an animal side to their nature, or spiritual concepts; by contrast, furries are more commonly focused on furry art and/or role-playing related to anthropomorphic animals.

Therianthropy - free-definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
A lycanthrope is not a therianthrope, or vice versa.
While therianthropes believe they can take on the mindset of their other side, often with uncanny accuracy, in what is referred to as a "mental shift", the individual retains control and is no danger to himself or others.
However, there is a strong, though ill-defined notion that a therianthrope is one who feels they are the animal inside, rather than an external connection such as a totem or spirit guide, and those who claim that external connections as their therianthropy are sometimes shunned as fakers.

The therianthrope's anima, then, is the animal(s) that he/she has a very strong connection to (as mentioned before).
Some people have theorized that either the therianthrope's soul is that animal, and it has also been suggested that their souls have been melded together; meaning that the soul is half-human, and half-animal.
Others think that therianthropes simply have a very strong affinity for that animal, and that a soul is just a soul and doesn't have a specific form.

Your use of the word "therianthrope" tells me that you've already decided that there is no validity to Therianthropy and further, that it is only a mindset that is adopted by individuals who adjust their behaviour accordingly.
Therefore, for common cases of > therianthropes, their therianthropic nature is an embedding of the > therianthropic model from contact with those already carrying the model on > the network.
Myself and the Therianthropes that I've had the pleasure to meet use this spiritual aspect of ourselves to lead happier lives and to make a difference on this planet.

The Temple: Library: What does it mean to be a were - and is were is the word to use?
Increasingly, the word "therian" is being used as a shorter and simpler alternative to "therianthrope", and "were", while it's still used in some circles, seems to be falling out of favour as more people realize that it means virtually the opposite of what it's used as.
So a therianthrope, in a general sense, is someone who in some way has the characteristics of both a human being, and a wild animal of some sort.
A therianthrope is someone who embraces the in-between spaces within these dichotomies; murky realms of ambiguity and paradox rather than the safe but stale absolutes.

Therianthropes are identified by their ability to declare that humans suck.
All Therianthropes possess a physically human body, have experienced a lifetime of exposure to human culture and civilization, and operate with both Therianthropic instincts and feelings, and human thoughts and feelings caused both by social forces and physical biochemistry.
Any person discovering the concept of Therianthropy will inevitably discover that their Therianthrope species is whatever they perceive to be the most strategically advantageous to promote themselves as a hip, enlightened, and all-together cool persona in the Therianthropic community.

When (more) shifted into their animal-self, therianthropes may experience this one deeper ("I feel more wolfish", "my tail/ears/fur became present"), may have other urges than their usual self ("I started feeling like pouncing/howling"), and such as; the experience (and therefore, the definition) of shifting varies from therian to therian.
While a therianthrope would act animal or human when he got animal or human urges only, a contherianthrope would receive both human and animal urges constantly, and would be constantly choosing which way he must behave depending on the situation.
I have seen therianthropes on boards who said they couldn't shift anymore, but just because they are shiftless doesn't mean that they necessarily became contherians.

A therianthrope is more commonly known today as a 'shapeshifter'.The most recognized of which is the Lycanthrope, or Werewolf (Lycanthropology).
Therianthropes, however, are not limited to the stereotype of Lon Chaney Jr., the oversized wolfish beast from 'An American Werewolf in London', or the anthropomorphic grey hound-ish thing from the third Harry Potter movie.
The therianthrope 'becomes' their animal and that experience can range any where from affecting your personality to experiencing strange cravings.

Spiritual therianthropes are individuals who feel a deep connection with one or more animals, or sees aspects of animals manifest in his/her behavior and personality.
Whereas a Therianthrope will generally strive to shift in one form or another, Furries quite often only pretend to be the animal of their choice.
A Therianthrope however, especially those who lay claim to the ability to physically shift, generally remains the animal whether on the computer, at a job, in school, etc. For most of us, it is a key part of our lives.

One could say that the soul of a therianthrope is human, but that they have mental qualities more similar (excuse my grammar) to a non-human animal.
To sum it up: therianthropy is a personal, non-spiritual state of being in which the therianthrope's thoughts, emotions, reactions, and instincts are almost exactly like that of a non-human animal.

The general rule for someone being a Therianthrope is that they do indeed have this deep bond (be it spiritual, mental, instinctual or whatever) with a certain animal or more.
It should never ever be considered just a passion, or a love for that animal.
