Therianthropy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Therianthropy is a generic term for any transformation of a human into another animal form, either as a part of mythology or as a spiritual concept.
Those within this subculture who identify with a spiritual understanding of this phenomenon may believe that they have the spirit or soul, in whole or in part, of a non-human animal, and their beliefs often overlap to some extent with aspects of shamanism or totemism.
Spiritual therianthropy is not automatically the same as clinical lycanthropy, a mental illness in which an individual believes he or she belongs to or can change to another species.

Subculture: "In sociology, a subculture is a culture or set of people with distinct behavior and beliefs within a larger culture.
The subculture term has been around a lot longer than the term otherkin has been, so it's silly to call this one a neologism and suggest merging to the other when if anything that one would be more neologistic.

 Otherkin
The Otherkin subculture is made up of people who believe themselves to be partially non-human.
While some otherkin believe themselves to be biologically non-human — for example, by claiming distant, or not so distant descent from a non-human — others believe themselves to be human in biology but "other" in spirit, often attributing this to reincarnation or a "misplaced soul".
The reincarnationists, who currently are the dominant force in the subculture, disagree amongst themselves as to whether these otherkin souls come from Earth, other planets, or different planes of consciousness.

Because this is a personal self-perception, the ways in which a person describes his or her self-identification as a therianthrope vary considerably.
While some therianthropes believe they can take on the mindset of their "other side" in what is referred to as a mental shift, they believe that they retain control during these transformations and are no greater danger to themselves or others.
For instance, some furries view therianthropy as "taking it too far," while therianthropes may assert that furries are frivolous and don't pay attention to the true nature of animals.

More specifically it is a term used by a subculture of people who believe themselves to be a dragon in a psychological, spiritual, or (rarely) a biological sense.
The term "draconity," along with the subculture that originated it, seems to have arisen in the mid-90's through internet communication media such as Usenet newsgroups (particularily alt.fan.dragons) and IRC.
There is some fear that this tends to dilute the population of "genuine" dragons and discredits the subculture as a whole.

However, "Spiritual Therianthropy" has become a common term in the shifter subculture, and it's meaning is like a spiritual version of therianthropy rather than the physical version that most people think of as a real werewolf.
Spiritual Therianthropy is used to refer to the whole condition of being a shifter, to the vast array of feelings, spiritual or emotional feelings of "therianthropy", which are the common, defining features of a shifter.
I suppose spiritual therianthropy could just as easily be called "emotional therianthropy" or "instinctive therianthropy" but it ended up getting called spiritual therianthropy very early on and the name stuck.

In other words, given a choice between anarchism and anarchy, most anarchists would go for the anarchism ideology and subculture rather than take a dangerous leap into the unknown, into a world of stateless liberty.
But since anarchists are almost the only avowed critics of the state as such, these freedom-fearing folk would inevitably assume prominent or at least publicized places in any insurgency which was genuinely anti-statist.

Part of it is because therianthropy is something that can't be detected or measured beyond the person claiming to be one.
Another part is because people think therianthropy is the same thing as werewolfism or being able to turn into a cat, making it great fodder for Roleplaying Games and other groups, and the emphasis on meditation and spiritual awakening adds to that.
It should be noted that therianthropy isn't the same thing as being able to tourner à la forme de loup.
