Therizinosaurus lived in the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago, and its fossils were first exposed in Mongolia.
The feeding habits of Therizinosaurus are still debated, but it was most almost certainly an herbivore, using its big physical claws to push leaves into its mouth.
There are other likely uses for Therizinosaurus claws, such as defense against predators (such as the contemporary Tarbosaurus) and for intraspecific fight, such as hostility for territory or for mating.

Therizinosaurus cheloniformis was named for remains from the southern Gobi Desert, which included huge claws measuring up to 28 inches (without the horny sheath that covered them in life!) as well as seven-foot-long arms and some flattened ribs.
Therizinosaurus cheloniformis was kept in its own group for a long time.
One of the most striking characteristics of Therizinosaurus cheloniformis (apart from the myriad of striking characteristics it shares with other therizinosaurs) is the huge, blade-like claws on the hand.

The kills of a therizinosaurus tend to be messy, a fact which makes them avoided by all intelligent inhabitants of their territory.

Therizinosaurus has been an intriguing puzzle for scientists ever since several huge claws were first discovered in 1948.
Although there was not enough fossil material to determine its appearance, the claws were so unique that they had to be from a new species.
The feeding habits of Therizinosaurus are still debated, but it was most probably an herbivore, using its big manual claws to push leaves into its mouth.

Therizinosaurus had massive 70 centimeter long claws, probably used to rake leaves off trees.
Very few Therizinosaurus remains have been found so restorations have been based around its relatives Alxasaurus, Erlikosaurus, Segnosaurus and Beipiaosaurus.
Beipiaosaurus fossils have been found with feathers, so therizinosaurs were probably quite bird-like in their outward appearance.

Therizinosaurus may have used its huge claws to pull tree branches towards its mouth in order to feed on the leaves.

Some paleontologists have speculated that Therizinosaurus used its giant claws to rip open giant termite nests, making Therizinosaurus an insectivore (an insect-eater), but many paleontologists think that it was an herbivore (plant-eater).
Therizinosaurus' huge arms were 8 feet (2.45 m) long; it had claws up to 28 inches (70 cm) long.
When Therizinosaurus was found, it was first thought to be a giant turtle, not a dinosaur.

 Therizinosaurus Fact File
Therizinosaurus was first discovered in 1954, although, at that point, it was not even believed to be a dinosaur at all!
Therizinosaurus' remains, which were little more than a giant clawed hand and arm, were at first thought to belong to a giant turtle, hence its species name.
Like Therizinosaurus, these giant mammals had huge claws, stripped tree bark, fed mainly on plants, were (at least partially) bipedal, grew to massive sizes, and had a hairy body covering (although in Therizinosaurus, it was actually primitive feathers, and is merely speculative).

Rozhdestvensky speculated that Therizinosaurus was a giant dinosaurian anteater, using its claws to rip open anthills and termite mounds.
Noting a similarity between the shoulder blades of Segnosaurus and Therizinosaurus, Paul published a composite segnosaur skeletal reconstruction with giant therizinosaur claws in 1988.
Based largely on skeletal features of Alxasaurus, most dinosaurologists believe the therizinosauroids are highly derived, herbivorous members of the great group of predominantly carnivorous theropods, closely related to either ornithomimosaurs or oviraptorosaurs.

COMMENTS: Therizinosaurus had long arms (2.4m/7 ft long) ending in fingers tipped with huge curved claws.
It has been suggested that their claws may have been used to rip open termite mounds, but it is difficult to believe that animals as large as Segnosaurus and especially Therizinosaurus could have survived on such a diet.

Erlikosaurus had a small skull, but the big surprise was that it had small peg-like teeth and the anterior part of the muzzle was modified into a toothless, bill-like structure similar to a bird's beak.
The bird-like beak and lack of teeth were unsuitable for a meat-eater, which meant that Therizinosaurus was a herbivore.
They had long arms with enormous claws on their manus (hands); some were up to 3 feet long.

In the late 1950s, a number of different bones were found, including a tooth, another large claw and parts of the front and rear limbs that also included a four-toed foot.
These bones were so bizarre that paleontologists didn't know what to make of them except to classify them together because of the strange claws.
Parts of the pelvis and other bones were also found, which gave paleontologists a better look at what was shaping up to be the strangest dinosaur ever to walk the earth.

For many years, these animals were known as segnosaurids, but the discovery of Alxasaurus showed their close relationship to a bizarre theropod named Therizinosaurus, which is based on a partial arm with meter-long claws.
In the past they have been classified as strange theropods, late-surviving prosauropods, descendants of a transition from prosauropods to ornithischians, and relatives of Sauropodomorpha.
