After all, eating itself is largely a way to harvest energy from other biomass, and eating is a sustainable project in the ecosystem (though not, perhaps, for a human population of its current size).

The Thermal Depolymerization company's website states 85% energy efficient - so, I'm inclined to think that that is correct, and that this Brian Appel doesn't know what "energy efficiency" means.
In comparison to the thermal depolymerization process energy use, the biodiesel plant uses one fifth of the energy, taking 2.75 gallons of fuel to make 100 gallons of biodiesel.
