Thermal grease - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thermal grease (also called thermal compound, thermal paste, or heat sink compound) is a substance that increases thermal conductivity between the surfaces of two or more objects.
Silicone-based thermal grease has moderate thermal conductivity, is usually white, and is often shipped with CPU heat sinks.
Thermal grease's primary purpose in electronics is to mediate small surface imperfections between an integrated circuit (also known as a chip) and a heat sink.

Interface Material - Thermal Grease Interface Materials from Thermaflo
Thermal greases are manufactured by dispersing thermally conductive fillers (ceramics, Boron Nitride, Alumina, etc.) in either a silicone or hydrocarbon oil carrier to form a paste of varying viscosities.
Thermal greases achieve performance increases through their ability to conform and level to both the contours of the heat sink and the device package, not typically due to higher bulk thermal conductivity.
Thermal conductivity is maximized by using a minimum amount of material and achieving the minimum distance between the heat sink and package.

The other greases have a consistency similar to mayonnaise, while the Shin-Etsu MicroSi was more like spreading cold butter on bread; it was denser than the other four and more difficult to apply in a thin, uniform coat.
I tested the five thermal greases using the Die Simulator (69.1 watts) with a Thermalright SLK800, cooled with an ADDA 60mm fan spinning at 5550 rpm.
A thin grease layer was applied to the die, then the heatsink was mounted using the heatsink's clip.

In the olden days a couple of years ago, rubbery thermal pads were common; they perform quite poorly, but you can usually remove and replace the cooler without having to replace the thermal pad as well, and they work well enough for low-heat CPUs.
Most pre-applied thermal stuff these days is either a neat square of grease applied by a machine (generally using the same basic techniques used to silk-screen T-shirts), or a pad of stuff with the consistency of flaky chewing gum.
People who use a lot of thermal grease also tend to use a lot of tissues, paper towels and valuable tax documents that they grabbed by accident.

There’s a theory making the rounds that the MacBook Pro’s high temperatures are attributed to a misapplication of "thermal grease" that’s applied to the CPU and GPU chips during the manufacturing process.
MixedBag posted detailed before and after photos of his MacBook pro after removing the thermal grease and replacing it with "a fraction of a fraction of a millimeter thick layer of Arctic Silver 5 on the three chips." He goes on to say that it now runs much cooler.
The thermal grease modification is not for the faint of heart as it requires almost complete disassembly of your MacBook Pro.
