Thermoception - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thermoception or thermoreception is the sense by which an organism perceives temperature.
In larger animals, most thermoception is done by the skin.
A particularly specialized form of thermoception is used by some snakes, such as the pit vipers, which can effectively see the infrared radiation emitted by hot objects.

Sense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are a variety of pressure receptors that respond to variations in pressure (firm, brushing, sustained, etc).
Thermoception is the sense of heat and the absence of heat (cold), also by the skin and including internal skin passages.
There is some disagreement about how many senses this actually represents--the thermoceptors in the skin are quite different from the homeostatic thermoceptors which provide feedback on internal body temperature.

Trigeminal neuralgia is considered by most physicians to be the most painful condition known to man, and has, in fact, been called the, "suicide disease," because this has been the choice of many people who were unable to have their pain controlled with medications or surgery.
The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve, responsible for sensory data such as tactition (pressure), thermoception (temperature), and nociception (pain).
In those suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, the myelin sheath of this nerve has been damaged, causing the electrical impusles traveling along it to be erratic or excessive, activating pain regions in the brain.

Runx3 controls the axonal projection of proprioceptive dorsal root ganglion neurons - Nature Neuroscience   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Specifically, the central axons of DRG neurons that transmit nociception and thermoception project to the superficial layers of the dorsal horn, whereas those transmitting mechanoreception project to the deep layers of the dorsal horn.
In wild-type mice at postnatal day 0 (P0), TrkA, a marker for nociceptive and thermoceptive cutaneous sensory neurons, was detected in a large proportion of DRG neurons and in primary afferent axons of the superficial lamina of the dorsal horn (Fig.
Proprioceptive DRG neurons are known to synthesize the NT-3 receptor (TrkC), whereas nociceptive and thermoceptive DRG neurons synthesize the NGF receptor (TrkA).
