Thermochromism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thermochromic dyes are based on mixtures of leuco dyes with suitable other chemicals, displaying a color change (usually between the colorless leuco form and the colored form) in dependence on temperature.
Thermochromic inks or dyes are temperature sensitive compounds, developed in the 1970s, that temporarily change color with exposure to heat.
Thermochromic paints are seen quite often as a coating on coffee mugs, whereby once hot coffee is poured into the mugs, the thermochromic paint absorbs the heat and becomes colored or transparent, thus changing the appearance of the mug.

 ScreenWeb | Color-Changing Inks
The two major groups of color-changing inks are thermochromic, which change color in response to temperature fluctuations, and photochromic, which respond to variations in exposure to UV light (primarily sunlight).
Unfortunately, liquid crystal thermochromics are very difficult to work with and require highly specialized printing and handling techniques.
Leucodye thermochromics are used in a wide range of applications because they add value in unique ways.

The activation temperature is defined as the point the thermochromic pigment reaches 95% of its colorless state.
Thermochromic aqueous slurry – a 48% (w/w) concentration compatible with water based flexographic, UV, screen, offset, gravure and epoxy ink formulations.
The thermochromic pigments are sensitive to polar solvents.

Using Thermochromics to Save Energy?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
I think the concept of using thermochromics is an excellent material/application to adapt into typical residential and commercial construction methods.
the temperature at which thermochromic properties react does not coincide with typical environmental changes that would be necessary for proper efficiency reduction techniques.
thermochromic and otheer "chromic" applications are expensive due to the lack of ecomonomic and social demand on energy efficient practices ad applications.

Special effects making a comeback? You betI   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Consumers are reverting to the special-effects movement, which is being pushed by "new and improved" old effects and nifty new effects yet to be experienced by the average shirt buyer.
We now have improved photochromics and thermochromics, as well as stone-wash, acid-wash, discharge, enhancing, re-hancing, foil, puff, glow-in-the-dark, reflective, metallic, conductive, 3-D puff, chalkboard and suede, to name a few.
Photochromic (light-sensitive) and thermochromic (heat-sensitive) are the common "chromatics" found in print shops these days, and hydrochromatics (water-sensitive) are well on the way.

 Imaging On-Line Store
The ability to print high-resolution thermochromic indicia, combining conventional inks with sophisticated printing technologies to either camouflage latent messages or create a warning message when copied, is new.
The conventional ink must match the thermochromic ink in density and color hue in order to perfectly hide at typical office room temperature.
But, because thermochromic inks are both temperature sensitive and low in color pigment, the Copy/Void message prints through the ink onto the copy.

 Chromatics: The Science of Color
The section dealing with "Color in solids" examines how colors are produced by the interference of light using an audio CD, how UV light can be detected using fluorescence, and how light emitting diodes work.
Investigations are also performed with materials that change color in response to temperature (thermochromics), which are often used as temperature indicators.
The unit concludes with an investigation into materials which change color in response to the application of an electric current (electrochromics).

 Thermochromic & Photochromic Inks
The color change of certain substances by changing temperatures is called "thermochromism", There are a number of substances that demonstrate this phenomenon.
The range of color is fairly broad as is the temperature at which the color change takes place.
The photochromic materials can be used in a number of formulations including paints, inks and plastics such as PVC, PVB,PP,CAB EVA, urethanes and acrylics.

Thermochromics are chemicals or similar that can change color based on the temperature or on the application of electricity.
I was thinking about the possibility rooftops being painted with thermochromics that were either triggered by temperature or electricity.
If my rooftop were fl during cold weather (triggered by cold) then it would help absorb heat which would in turn help heat my building.

Using Innovation Mapping to Encourage Breakthrough Product Development (MDDI archive, Sep 02)
Inevitably there will be some filtering out of these possibilities based upon cost and practicality, but it's important to keep an open mind.
For instance, maybe the use of thermochromics would not be an innovation, but incorporating the technology into the product at low cost would be.
The point is that using a simple process to drive innovation improves the chance of getting to a result.

Generally these types of devices are not “privacy” types because you can see through them even at their low light transmission levels.
These technologies include electrochromics, suspended particle devices, photochromics and thermochromics.
These are generally termed “smart windows” because they can control the amount of light energy entering a room while most light scattering technologies will transmit the majority of the light energy.
