Thesaurus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word thesaurus is derived from 16th century New Latin, in turn from Latin thesaurus, from ancient Greek thesauros, "store-house", "treasury".
In the field of Artificial Intelligence, a thesaurus may sometimes be referred to as an ontology.
Thesaurus designers are generally careful to ensure that BT and NT indicate class relationships, as distinguished from part-whole relationships.

 Astronomy Thesaurus Introduction
The thesaurus is also designed to give the librarian, cataloguer or indexer, as well as the astronomer, a context for astronomical terms with which they may not be familiar.
Their inclusion in the main thesaurus, together with the large number of terms with which they might be combined, would have added considerably to the bulk of the thesaurus without adding significantly to its information content.
If the thesaurus is to serve as originally intended by Commission 5 of the IAU - to standardise the astronomical terminology -, then authors should use only the upper case terms in the thesaurus in their keyterm lists.

National Heritage Policies : European Heritage Network - Réseau Européen du Patrimoine
A thesaurus is the vocabulary of a controlled indexing language formally organized so that the a priori relationships between concepts are made explicit.
Besides which, the thesaurus offers the user a terminological tool which allows them to have a better understanding of all the concepts they come across when reading the reports; thanks to the hierarchical and associative interplay of terms, the users can complete or extend their knowledge of the subject.
When building the hierarchy of the thesaurus, the teams tried to avoid poly-hierarchies as much as possible,, that is to say the possibility for a broader term to appear under more than one class; this aim was achieved by giving preference to associative relationships.

 Thesaurus 2
The sources for the Wiggy Thesaurus are varied, but they all have one thing in common — they aided in the organization and explanation of the creation of our Wiggy Thesaurus.
Of particular use for our thesaurus creation were Chapters 8 through10, which describe the making of, and caring for wigs, and Chapter 14 that covers the history of postiche, including the twentieth century.
As it covered all of the 20th Century, which is the era in which our wig thesaurus started, this book gave a great foundation for basic words and phrases that are used throughout the thesaurus.

I presented the SWAD-E Thesaurus Activity's SKOS initiative, which is attempting to lay the foundations for a community driven development of standards in the area of the semantic web and knowledge organisation systems.
I presented the SKOS-Core RDF Schema for RDF encodings of thesaurus and terminological data as a solution for this requirement, and the proposal was well-received.
The Thesaurus Activity of the SWAD-Europe project is concerned with exactly this problem, and although our work on a thesaurus web-service API is still in progress, we've already done some interesting pre-prototype implementations of modular services and applications.

For those who use Roget's Thesaurus it is one of the three most important books ever printed...along with The Bible and Webster's Dictionary.
The first draft of the Thesaurus was written in 1805, two years before Webster started on his dictionary.
I had often during that long interval found this little collection, scanty and imperfect though it was, of much use to me in literary composition, and often contemplated its extension and improvement; but a sense of the magnitude of the task, amidst a multiple of other avocations, deterred me from the attempt.

A thesaurus is the list of approved words and phrases used by indexers to describe the subject matter of the database.
The thesaurus display may include a scope note, textual definition or description of how the term is used; shows the term's hierarchy (broader and narrower terms); and lists related terms (similar in concept but not hierarchically linked).
This means that the thesaurus does not use your term, either as a valid subject heading or as a reference to a valid subject heading.

Ways in which thesaurus development software can be used are discussed, and attention is drawn to the need for interaction between thesaurus developers and user interface designers to allow the benefits of a thesaurus-based information retrieval system to be fully realised.
This project investigates the ways in which access to a thesaurus can be used by searchers to formulate searches of an indexed collection, and ways in which search terms can be expanded automatically to include additional terms more or less closely linked to the initial term by relationships in the thesaurus structure.
"The thesaurus collection is based on the results of the interdisciplinary seminar 'Terminology documentation and multilingual thesauri' held in summer 1998 and in which participated students from both the Department of LIS and the Department of Languages" of the Fachhochschule Köln.
