The role of the thesis committee, in conjunction with the thesis adviser, is to advise the student on scientific direction and evaluate progress.
The thesis committee and the committee chair must be registered with the Graduate Group Office as soon as it is approved by the GCB Chair.
If a thesis committee member cannot be present at the defense, he/she may provide to the committee chair approval of and/or comments concerning the thesis prior to the defense.

If the committee is established early, then stop by or send a brief update to them two or three times a year so that they can follow your progress.
