Aesthetically, the films wandered from pastoral landscapes and sedate compositions to the avant garde and visual pyrotechnics.
The film focuses on a single day in the lives of Adolph Hitler and his mistress Eva Braun while they stayed at the Fuhrer's Alpine retreat in Berchtesgaden during the late spring of 1942, a few months before the German defeat at Stalingrad.
Thessaloniki International Film Festival is held annually in mid-November in Greece's second largest city, located on the Thermaikos Gulf of the northern Aegean Sea.

Thessaloniki’s film festival has a long history, stretching back to 1960, in the golden age of Greek film.
Filmfestivals.com met with Demopoulos, still at the festival’s helm, to discuss the contradictions of being both a national and an international festival, the state of Greek film-making and the danger that there may be political interventions in the festival.
Thessaloniki deliberately avoided being a so-called “Class A” festival, and you’ve tried to be more of a film-maker’s event.

Thessaloniki Film Festival, Part II -- Greek Independents
Although the festival still has a ways to go in achieving Locarno status, the international competition is restricted to only 1st or 2nd time filmmakers, giving lesser known films and filmmakers a chance to be showcased.
The film ran away with the Silver Alexander, a cash purse of 7.5 million drachmas (roughly US $27,000) giving support to a talented new director whose simple drama and use of non-actors harkens back to the days of Italian neorealism.
Although international critics found many of the Greek competition films disappointing and even some of the international films conventional, the international festival is still in its formative years and its purpose of bringing worldwide independent films to Greece is surely successful.

 [No title]
It's a film where a radical professor ("I think all authority should be undermined") is played by Gianvito himself, whereas his antagonist - the father of a boy in his class, who thinks him a bad influence on his son - is a bull-necked redneck type simmering with violence ("You son of a bitch!").
It's a film which finally gives up on characters altogether, getting real-life peace activists to play themselves, reciting poems with titles like "War Poem Autobiography" and sharing their stories for the benefit of a mixed-up youngster ("I feel I've learned by listening," he says thoughtfully when the session is over).
The film is set in the Georgian community of Israel, making it (I suspect) something like a hillbilly movie in the US - characters are 'colourful' and obviously backward, with their superstitions and arranged marriages - yet the eccentric relatives and high-volume family quarrels co-exist uncomfortably with a hard, cutting sensibility.

It would be hard, then, for an Albanian film set in the present to avoid the topic of emigration and how the country's inhabitants view the opulence of cities such as Paris, Milan and New York.
The film, however, caused something of a scandal when it premiered in Albania (on 26 October), and he was widely accused by the media of flening the country's name.
Hints at reasons for the film's popularity can be gained from a press conference held by the international jury at Thessaloniki before the results were announced (and, indeed, before they had seen all the competition films).

The biggest film festival in Greece and the most cosmopolitan film festival in Southeast Europe, Thessaloniki serves up a broad spectrum of world cinema, with the usual mixture of retrospectives, tributes and regional specialisms.
Featured in the Balkan Survey section of the festival, the film functions as an allegory for Balkan politics and conflict and feels tinged with a degree of xenophobic sentiment but the direction is compelling and the cinematography (by Vladimir Samoilovski) superb.
Thessaloniki is a Greek film festival and it would be nice to report that there were also some good Greek films on view.

Originally the capital of Macedonia, Thessaloniki soon became a Roman capital — that is, until it was overrun by the Turks and swept into the Byzantine Empire and finally liberated by the Greeks.
And while such imperial takeovers are now a thing of the past, modern Thessaloniki must ride the tumultuous economic waves of the European Union, as well as weather the instability of the Balkan nations that surround it.
But if the festival must promote Greek film to the world, its secondary and equally potent agenda is to bring world film to Greece, or at least to the seaside theaters that harbor the festival.
