The Sandman (DC Comics Modern Age) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sandman was a comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics for 75 issues from 1988 until 1996.
A Game of You (collecting The Sandman #32-37, 1991-1992): Barbie, a New York divorcee, travels to the magical realm that she once inhabited in her dreams, only to find that it is being threatened by the forces of the Cuckoo.
Sandman also helped popularize individual typescripts for the word balloons of certain characters, a technique that had been used in Cerebus the Aardvark and scattered other places.

Thessaly (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thessaly is a fictional character in the Sandman comic book stories.
She is the last of the millennia-old witches of Thessaly, who makes her first appearance in A Game of You.
Thessaly is driven more by her ego than her desire to help a friend in need.

Who Killed Dream of the Endless?
Before Sandman and the Vertigo line of comics, she was a mainstay in the DC Universe as the Amazonian daughter of an alternate Earth's Wonder Woman.
Her physical body is provided protection by the witch-woman Thessaly while her mental self joins the Kindly Ones to destroy the Dreaming and its master.
Thessaly warns her that the quest to destroy Dream has made her many enemies, so she is forced into hiding until Daniel, now a manifestation of Dream assures her that he will watch over her to keep her safe.

Comixfan Forums - View Single Post - THESSALY: WITCH FOR HIRE #1 REVIEW
The conversation between Thessaly and Fetch is reminiscent of Willingham’s Snow White and Prince Charming, with the somewhat goofy Fetch presenting his wild and crazy scheme to the ruthlessly practical Thessaly.
Thessaly, with her big round glasses and librarian looks, never looked like a millennia-old witch who’d kill a god if it were in her best interests, and McManus has made her look even more harmless here.
Thessaly seems more "real" than her supporting cast: Like Fetch, the Italian townspeople have a more cartoonish quality to them, while Thessaly is usually quite detailed; she often looks like an escapee from a John Byrne book.

Thessaly fulfills Fetch’s latest mission for her, even as she keeps him under restraint.
This issue it’s a hungry genie cornered in a diner, and Thessaly’s way of enrapturing the diner-folk (which recalls an early Sandman story involving a particularly gruesome day in a diner) is wonderfully presented through both image and dialogue.
And the disparity between her lithe, girlish form (not to mention all the charming nick-nacks she carts around on her travels) and her immortal might is a principle source of the dark humor that powers this series.

Thessaly, one of the darker characters of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, seems an odd choice for this tone, but in fact she serves as a great "straight man" (if you will) for the magical hijinks that fill the book.
Even Thessaly, for all her cold demeanor, demonstrates a dry sense of humor.
Gaiman created a wide variety of characters, all of whom have potential for stories of different types, and though I'd just as soon see something original from this creative team, they have taken an established character and crafted something original around her, which is almost as good.

Thessaly (a pseudonym) is a pragmatic, ruthless witch who's at least three thousand years old, and was one of the Thessalian witches of ancient Greece.
Though far from wantonly violent, Thessaly has survived the millennia by revenging herself with lethal consequence upon anyone who tries to harm her.
Willingham's script is lively, nicely balanced between dialogue and art, and doesn't suffer from the decompression phenomena afflicting a lot of ongoing modern comic series—each part is rounded in itself, as well as forming part of a greater whole.

Thessaly comes back from a six-year quest for answers against the doom Fetch has brought upon her.
Thessaly has apparently attracted a Tharmic Null, the embodied colossal representation of instant doom (he looks a lot like Omega, an old ogre an insane Braniac 5 once dreamed up in Starlin’s Legion run), as her fate, and there’s nothing she can do about it.
A sequence of her prehistoric origin is especially provocative and unusually sexy and violent for the now restrained, jaded ancient girl she’s become.

Thessaly (the super old but very young looking witch) goes with, um, what are their names, er...those punker lesbian women into the dreaming in "A Game of You" to rescure Barbara and meets Morpheus there for the second time.
Morpheus of course shows up in Thessaly's apartment where the two have a bit of a fight and he realizes that he can do nothing to changeThessaly's mind (ie; to break the blood circle and allow Dream to stop Daniel's mom from destroying the dreaming).
It is there that we can confirm Thessaly and Dream's relationship when Thessaly talks about how Dream "nervously courted her" and how she realized that she never actually loved him.

I especially love the fact that we see Thessaly's power and true age through her matter-of-fact approach to virtually every challenge that is thrown in her path.

The Trades - Entertainment Industry Analysis
Thessaly was first introduced in Neil Gaiman's Sandman story, "A Game Of You." Since then, and beyond the conclusion of the series, she has remained one of the more enigmatic and compelling characters to continue on with other stories.
The opening to this mini finds Thessaly living in Italy, trying to just coast by as usual--only to come home with her groceries and find that once again, her home has been invaded, this time by a Naga beast that spews forth hundreds of frogs upon its expiration.
But this time things are different--because Thessaly finally discovers the reason behind the rash of attacks, all of which tie back to her previous connection with with a composite ghost named Fetch, and his newest idea to become a monster dispatcher.

 The Unofficial Thessaly Biography
The last of the Thessalian witches (Thessaly is a region, infamous for its witches during ancient times), the woman calling herself Thessaly is still alive and poses as an intellectual (or 'geeky') girl on Earth.
Sometimes calling herself Larissa, Thessaly is possibly identical with the original Larissa, the daughter of king Pelasgus of Argos.
(Larissa had a town in the region of Thessaly named after her.) Thessaly/Larissa had a brief love relation with Morpheus the Sandman, and was partly responsible for his death and rebirth as Daniel.

Gaiman often says that he considers the Sandman collections to have genders, as each seems clearly to be more liked by one gender than another; he considers A Game of You to be female, since many female fans consider it the best Sandman collection but few male fans do.
This is a land which at first glance appears to have drawn on every available fantasy cliche, most clearly the Chronicles of Narnia series.
Its ending is one of the most hauntingly poignant parts of the whole series, as Barbie heads west to attend Wanda's funeral in the disapproving rural society where she was born, as Alvin.

Gaiman pushes these worlds to their very extremes--one is a fantasy world with talking animals, a missing princess, and a mysterious villain called the Cuckoo; the other is an urban microcosm inhabited by a drag queen, a punk lesbian couple, and a New York doll named Barbie.

What's just happened is that Thessaly (the one with the big glasses) has just summoned the Moon, who doesn't appear to be very happy.
It seems like the depiction of the Moon's been influenced by the idea that God is three but also one, with the threefold facial features, and the echoes in the central frame.
When Thessaly says, 'you are mine to disperse of, mine to command,' the Moon just says, 'Perhaps,' and warns Thessaly that her hubris will be her undoing.
