Leave Thetford and head towards Newmarket on the A11, just after Elverden turn right on the B1106, go past the Mayday Farm and your there,pull in on one of the access roads and enjoy.
Thetford forest is a man made forest that was planted to stop soil erosion that was cause by the sandy desert that once was.
Thetford Forest is littered with single tracks created by man management of the whole area.There are a few bomb holes to practice on, busy with bikers on a Sunday morning.

The Thetford Forest Road map shows the main forest lanes as fl dotted lines some of which form part of the waymarked routes.
There are a number of signposted bridleways one which takes you out of the forest, starting on the B1106 at Mayday farm, and heads south for a reasonable distance.
The better single track is located nearer the B1106 and a good starting point is the forest access road that I have indicated by an arrow on the road map or at the junction of tree blocks 97, 98 on the forest map.

Anyway, yesterday Simon and I went to Thetford forest, which is a (mostly) pine forest, originally planted in 1922-1930.
There are broad flat forest roads separating the plots of trees, and occasionally some slightly narrower flat paths going into the plots of land.

Thetford Forest has an abundant number of earthworks, some largely unknown, some hidden inside dense pine compartments.
The Roman ceramic finds from site 32349 at Thetford (see Subsidiary Finds in Report 1) were taken to the Norfolk Archaeological Unit (NAU) at Norwich to be compared with finds from an excavation at Two Mile Bottom.

Leaving Thetford there are a number of campsites marked on our map in the small part of the forest to the east.
Cycling all the way around the forest we eventually found an extremely well equipped site hidden in the depths of the forest.
I was slightly apprehensive about this, when camping by bike you can't do much apart from going to the pub once it's dark and I wasn't looking forward to a five mile bike road home afterwoods, fortunatly the campsite had an open onsite bar.

We are based in the east of england and are into just about everything MTB from free riding, to XC Enduro racing, we don't like to categorize our riding, just do it.
Either riders need to do the work and get it back in shape or the posts need to be removed, currently all were seeing is it getting wider and more eroded.

There are almost 600 bat boxes on pine trees in the Thetford Forest area which straddles the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk.
These are checked for bats four or five times each year by licenced members of the Norfolk Bat Group, the Suffolk Bat Group and The Bob Stebbings Consultancy.
