They Might Be Giants - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They Might Be Giants (commonly abbreviated to TMBG) is an American pop/rock duo consisting of John Linnell and John Flansburgh, collectively known as "the two Johns" or "John and John".
TMBG's most famous songs are probably one single from each of their first three albums, "Don't Let's Start" (from They Might Be Giants), "Ana Ng" (from Lincoln), and "Birdhouse in Your Soul" (from Flood).
TMBG also became slightly involved with the electoral process by contributing a track to the Future Soundtrack For America compilation, a project compiled by John Flansburgh with the help of Spike Jonze and Barsuk Records.

While new fans flocking to the Giants may be a little wet behind the ears, the band's saga goes way back to Boston in the early '80s, when the two Johns met as fellow incendiaries on a student newspaper.
More recently, the Giants' music has been popping up in unexpected places that have turned out to be absolutely appropriate: on Warner Bros. cartoons, over the credits to Fox's hit show Malcolm in the Middle (with "Boss of Me"), and theme songs for nerdy science programs on major TV networks (ABC's "Brave New World").

And TMBG have done exactly this---they've gone from a two-person group using synthesisers and sampling techniques to an assembly-line rock band, killing the old TMBG we know, but yet remaining true to their old roots and producing a rather fine self-parodying album.
The audience reaction is anticipated with illustrations of "We Hate They Might be Giants" signs and children carrying skulls with "they" written on it on the album cover.

They might not have the greatest chops (well, Linnell is an accordion virtuoso if there ever was one) or be the best songwriters, but they make up for it in pure resourcefulness, using their quirky selves to develop music off of ideas that shouldn't work.
The Giants are still currently around, and even though they're certainly as prolific as they were before (all of the first five albums had at least 18 tracks on them), it's in a much different way, as they've been going down the Mark Mothersbaugh route of doing songs for commercials and TV shows.
But to compromise with 'old' Giants, they decided to remain just as prolific and varied as they were in the past, but since their songs are a lot more complicated, they also became a lot longer than they needed to be, resulting in the longest Giants album on the market.

One of the most striking things about “They Might Be Giants” is the script, most notably the poetic quality of the dialogues.
On this premise “They Might Be Giant” is an intelligent movie that weaves both elements together to create a tale that is sometimes funny, sometimes thrilling and sometimes romantic without ever losing focus.

True, the Giants do suffer from too much cleverness, but songs like "Birdhouse in Your Soul," "Ana Ng" and the fabulous "Snail Shell" are merely classy exercises in old-fashioned pop, more Cole Porter than Devo.
But a better term might be "smart rock." The band approaches banal subjects like love and happiness obliquely and playfully; they are Oingo Boingo for adults, a musical Monty Python.
