Because of They Might Be Giants, I began to explore what "that kind of music", which I had now adopted de facto as my kind of music, meant in terms of all the other music out there.
Since their self-produced, independently released Bar/None/Restless album They Might Be Giants in 1986, TMBG have put out eleven proper albums, including a rarities collection, a live/greatest hits album, a retrospective double-disc set, an MP3-only album, and culminating in the recent release of this year's Mink Car.
It might not be the album that saved my life, but its one in a long string of consecutively great albums, and it just might save your day.

Still, many of the album's high points are on the mellow side, such as Flansburgh's oddly poignant "The World Before Later On," a lament for the flying-car, food-pill future that we've been promised since the Jetsons and still hasn't arrived yet.
The album's penultimate track, "Stalk of Wheat," is a song about being out of ideas, an idea they already covered on They Might Be Giants' "Number Three"; however, they've never written a song about a creative drought that's sounded so much like a creative drought before.
Nevertheless,They Might Be Giants have bounced back from worse dry spells, and even if The Spine is decidedly uneven, it still has enough good songs to please diehard fans and keep them around for the next album.

The second They Might Be Giant's opus refined the sound and silliness of the self-titled debut to make one of the quirkiest and most enjoyable modern rock albums of the late 80s.
They Might Be Giants was a lovable duo who went from budding genius with their first two albums, to fullscale masterpiece of the ages on Flood and then slowly dwindled down to embarrassing mediocrity with each and every album afterwards.

To say that it’s the Giants album with the bleakest lyrics is missing the point; what they really are is the cleverest lyrics in their oeuvre, and that’s saying a lot.
With this album, They Might Be Giants underwent a sea change, apparent both in their live shows and in their studio releases.

They might not have the greatest chops (well, Linnell is an accordion virtuoso if there ever was one) or be the best songwriters, but they make up for it in pure resourcefulness, using their quirky selves to develop music off of ideas that shouldn't work.
The Giants are still currently around, and even though they're certainly as prolific as they were before (all of the first five albums had at least 18 tracks on them), it's in a much different way, as they've been going down the Mark Mothersbaugh route of doing songs for commercials and TV shows.
But to compromise with 'old' Giants, they decided to remain just as prolific and varied as they were in the past, but since their songs are a lot more complicated, they also became a lot longer than they needed to be, resulting in the longest Giants album on the market.

Here's the dilemma: They Might Be Giants do use accordions (seemingly in every other song, along with horns, organs, violin, and of course guitar), but the results sure as heck aren't hellish.
The two Johns (Linnell and Flansburgh) are something of an acquired taste, admittedly; to play an accordion invariably leads you to produce an offputting oom-pah-pah sound, and when you pair that with Linnell's nasal vocals, one is tempted to frantically reach for the off button on ye olde remote controle.

They Might Be Giants have a surprisingly large amount of collections in their discography; most of them, like "Then: The Earlier Years", are dedicated to cataloging the band's first few years.
This is somewhat understandable, considering just how many songs They Might Be Giants have written over the years -- and at 29 tracks, this collection isn't that much bigger than some of the band's regular albums.
As its title implies, "A User's Guide to They Might Be Giants" tries to represent as many of the group's different kind of songs as possible within a relatively small package.

Anyway, I cannot pledge that this album has a single moment of ear-burstingly gratifying listening, as was the case with "Ana Ng" and "She's an Angel" on the past two recordings.
Half the time, I think "oh, what a great album that is! certainly one of their finest." But the rest of the time, it always seems that some of the songs are...lacking.
But I do think quite highly of this album, and regardless of the occasional over-cuteness of the lyrics ("The House at the Top of the Tree" comes to mind), I have to say this is probably the best TMBG album since..er..

This album ends with several sleepy-time songs including what John Flansburg has described as a "celebration of the day," which celebrates things like eating, being with friends, watching TV, reading, brushing teeth, etc. I really like the zen-like idea that everything a person does is worth celebrating.

They Might Be Giants fans might be a bit disappointed at how few actual songs are included, but it's important to remember that this isn't a They Might Be Giants album.
Several previously-released songs are also included here ("West Virginia", from the previously released State Songs album by John Linnell, and "(She Thinks She's) Edith Head", from the MP3-only Long Tall Weekend), and they serve well as a counterpoint to the spikier, more dissonant, less musical pieces also on offer.
They might not even all be worth a listen, but that's the way things go in the world of pop music/contemporary literature collaboration.

They Might Be Giants are too good to be true, a couple of intelligent dorks who have made a career out of making catchy songs that sound like a cross between rock, children's music, and commercial jingles from before 1950.
Although this is a great album, it doesn't feel as fresh as the first three, and the latter half of the album sags a bit.
There are only a few annoying things on the album, like the overall impression I get that the boys are painfully trying not to condescend, a fear true children's records don't have, but the best news is that it's an album anyone can listen to over and over.

Basically, when I was sifting through our discography and trying to figure out what album this actually would be, what number it would be, I was happy to see that it would be our 10th album.
I think a lot of bands don't get that kind of encouragement from their fans; I think a lot of bands actually sort of suffer from audiences that are much more conservative than they are, and they want to hear the band doing their most essential thing.

Cityzen.tv: Album Review- They Might Be Giants (The Spine)
It used to be that a new They Might Be Giants album was a promise of wonderment for us listeners.
For instance, take "Thunderbird" and "Au Contraire." Very clever, lyrically, but instead of spotlighting what the duo is known for in a new context, they sound very much like carbon copies of some of the work that TMBG did in the 1990s ("Till My Head Falls Off" and "Dinner Bell," specifically).
As a result, I'm a happy, self-righteous critic for a webzine, for I know that it is this honesty that has allowed, and continues to allow, TMBG to stand as one the strongest creative forces of any era.
