Expendable launch system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most satellites are launched using expendable launchers; they are perceived as having a low risk of mission failure, a short time to launch and a relatively low cost.
Many see it as unfortunate that most "modern" orbital expendables are derived from ballistic missiles, as these missiles were built to Cold War specs and with Cold War budgets, and argue that this makes for horrendously expensive launch vehicles.
Expendable launch systems typically consist of stages which are discarded one by one, in order not to have to carry and accelerate parts that are no longer needed, see staging and multistage rocket, as opposed to the as-yet theoretical single stage to orbit system.

Most expendable launchers are derivatives of 1950s-era ballistic missiles.
Many see it as unfortunate that most "modern" expendables are derived from ballistic missiles, as these missiles were built to Cold War specs and with Cold War budgets, and argue that this makes for horrendously expensive launch vehicles.
However, there is no reason in principle why an expendable single stage to orbit system might not also be possible; it is just generally more efficient to use staging when the system is not meant to be recovered intact.

Bulkeley’s fictional alter-ego in ‘Expendable,’ Lt. John Brickley (Robert Montgomery), is having trouble getting his superior officers to see the military value of his new PT craft.
Indeed, by the end, ‘They Were Expendable’ is in some sense a movie about survivor guilt; the characters are more comfortable facing their own deaths than heading home, as comrades will surely die in their places.
Although war and its effects are depicted much more cleanly here than they are these days -- we see virtually no blood or maiming, we hear no screams of agony -- the filmmakers credibly capture the attitudes of men trying to conceal their emotions as they go ever deeper into a terrifying situation.

: They Were Expendable - DVD film   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
They Were Expendable is the greatest American film of the Second World War, made by America's greatest director, John Ford, who himself saw action from the Battle of Midway through D-day.
Or perhaps not so oddly: for as the matter-of-fact title implies, the film commemorates a period, from the eve of Pearl Harbor up to the impending fall of Bataan, when the Japanese conquest of the Pacific was in full cry and U.S. forces were fighting a desperate holding action.
They Were Expendable, however, which was made when Allied victory was all but assured, is profoundly elegiac, with the patient grandeur of a tragic poem.

The leader of the Expendables was Captain James Conrad, an irascible cuss with one bionic arm and one bionic eye, who'd been kicked out of command duty in the Space Service in disgrace due to his violent tendencies.
Conrad's faithful companions were Lieutenant Indira Smith, a woman from the Subcontinent with bionic legs and white hair (from the trauma that cost her the legs), and Dr. Kurt Kwango, a half-Nigerian, half-German ecologist who was both the brains and the muscle of the operation.

In John Ford's They Were Expendable, John Wayne's Lieutenant Rusty Ryan insists that the P-T boats, equipped with guns and torpedo tubes, could slip into the Japanese harbors.
It was somehow anachronistic to see in late l945 a war picture that stresses the values of self-service and devotion to duty.
They Were Expendable and other war films that followed demonstrated that "once the war was over, the war film tended to slide in social significance from a cause to a genre, from a statement of principle to a set of platitudes."

A major work in the career of John Ford, They Were Expendable reflects the great director's love of the U.S. Navy and admiration of the men and women who fought the Second World War.

They Were Expendable offers glimmers of the psychological complexity that marks later Ford films like The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

He asked Ford, for example, to make changes in The Were Expendable, because he did not like the humiliatiion involved in the evacuation scene from Bataan.
Thus, a new scene, in which he was willing to disobey orders and sneak off to a jungle guerrilla, until a superior officer orders him back aboard, was added.
By contrast, he liked the scene in which he loathes leaving the battlefront, "I got business here," because it was congruent with the independent and rebellious streak in his screen persona.

Set in 1941 (and released in 1945, when the war was still going on!), we are treated to John Wayne's perfunctory performance as he ties up boats and unties them, then gets in a bunch of battles before having to tie up some more boats.
Interminably long, the film is nearly unwatchable and offers nothing new in the way of war (or anti-war) commentary.
Sure, the lowly PT boatmen weren't expendable, but their movie is.
